I searched and didn't find anything, Canon says it is putting HEIF on the 1D, is this to replace jpg and what does this mean for we who have existing gear?

My big concern is every time something like this happens my pc and the software lag well behind.

HEIF sounds interesting however, 2x the data in the same size file?

From what I have read it will do both. While gravitation would happen over time naturally I doubt they are dropping jpg for quite sometime. Much of that probably depends on the speed in which display systems and software catch up in using the heif type. (Not sure perhaps they can now)

The internet says, no jpg will be the standard for quite a while.

And yes, I understand that google is throwing its weight behind the new format.

My opinion is that there are so much many JPG images, and so many that will be made for years in the future, that JPG will be a standard, perhaps for decades.

More than that, the US National Archive has chosen tiff as it's preferred format and jpg as one of three acceptable formats. Given the number if images the National Archive is archiving, I suspect jpeg will be around for decades if not centuries.

I though HEIF is mainly an Apple pushed format.

You’re right. I was thinking about WebP that was a google thing a while back. It’s been a while since I read about this stuff.

This article gives a good glimpse of where we are (only mentions WebP briefly).

I still don’t see anything changing fast wrt jpg dominance.

Most articles I've read state that HEIF is being added to the 1D in addition to JPEG.

I transfered a couple of photos to my computer from my phone via AirDrop and they remained in the HEIF format. All of a sudden, I could not upload them for a Craigslist ad. So, had to do the conversion process to get them changed to JPEG. Needless to say, I switched the setting on my phone to take JPEG rather than the HEIF, just don't need another process step.

J2K is gaining its use in video. Which is motion JPEG.
