Hey all, I’m very close to selling my canon rig and moving over to a Fuji X-T2. I’m currently shooting a 5D mk III and shoot a TON of live music in pretty damn low light. I try to top out ISO on the 5D at 6400 now. I have no problem with grain (I generally process to high contrast black and whites so grain is fine with me ... I even add grain sometimes). How do you think the Fuji shooting between 1600 and 6400 on the 2.8 zooms (16-55 and 50-140) will do for me? Any examples out there? Your help is GREATLY appreciated!

I switched from 6D/7D2 a few years ago now. No regrets. They handle low light just fine. I do not have the 16-55 and prefer primes so I usually carry 2 bodies and the 35 and 50 f2's for shows. The 50-140 is not fun to carry around but you are probably used to the 70-200 on FF Canon so it will be a bit lighter. The beauty of the mirrorless crop Fuji is a small and light kit and you might just find yourself moving to a smaller bag like I did.

Do yourself a favor and go to your local camera store and make sure you HOLD the X-t2. Make sure it ergonomically fits your hand. Try it with the grip. For me the body alone is really small and too light... but with the grip it is just perfect for MY hands.

Huge help! Thank you! I am buying the xt2 from a buddy so I’ve checked it out and know that gripped it will be fine. The deal is soooo good. He wants to sell me the body and the 50-140 for $1100. Can’t beat it!

Would love to hear more reassurances from other folks too! Thanks so much for the image examples!!!!

Don't get me wrong... I love my 50-140. It is a damned good lens. That being said I enjoy the f2 primes a lot more. The 90mm f2 is an awesome lens. I think you will be really happy, just make sure to give yourself some time as the switch is a little hard to comprehend at first... especially when your muscle memory is Canon FF.

If you have bunch of FF Canon glass you might consider an adapter. I've heard they work pretty well. I never had the chance to consider one as I dived in head first and sold all my Canon gear in a few weeks. I'm very happy with my decision. Good luck!

That's an incredible deal... if you wanna buy it and sell it to me for $1200, hey, you'll make a $100 profit ;)

Seriously though, pick it up, use it for a bit and if you find it doesn't meet your needs, you'll have absolutely no issues selling it again.

Careful with the screws that hold in the tripod screw plate. It's a plate inside that is 1/4-20 UNC female thread. Known issue where the battery booster grip secures onto the body, it will loosen the plate in due time when those tiny screws fall out. Fuji is aware of this issue so they'd probably help you out even sourcing the tiny screws.

Often concert lighting can either be extremely easy or brutally challenging all depending on the spot lights/lighting.

If you had no issues with the 5dmk3 …..the x-t2 will not be an issue for you. Don't test the 5dmk4 or newer generation FF. If you were coming from a 5dmk4 you'd be seeing a big difference in IQ from a 5dmk4 vs X-t2. With newer sensor tech/age inside the X-t2 with Sony aps-c sensor it's a lateral move coming from a 5dmk3. The X-t2 colour in high iso will not exhibit the magenta garbage you can see in the 5mkd3 when you push hard in the shadows. In your case you are crushing blacks and adding contrast so you will not see much magenta in the 5dmk3 shadows in your processing.

For 1100 bucks this is a no brainer inexpensive experiment test that may reward you a lot ! No need to look further in examples from others. You should snag that deal before your buddy realizes he's selling too cheap LOL!!

You'll have no issues shooting up in the ISO on the X-T2, the grain is super nice with the Fuji, not all colour laden like the 5D3. I use two shoot the same camera as you now I'm content shooting Fuji for just about everything I do. Mostly I shoot with a few primes attached to bodies but I do own the 2.8 Zooms too & although I don't use them that often I'd never part with them as there are times when it just right for the job. Some low light high ISO shots:

None of these have any NR added, so see for yourself.

X-T2 @ 25600ISO

X-T3

This one was shot at 12800 and pushed 1.33 stops in post. The one at the end is shot at 51200ISO, again no NR added (set to -4 in camera too)

This is one of the first high ISO shots I took on the X-PRO2, SOOC JPEG @ 12800ISO & pushed up two stops in Lightroom (effectively 51,200ISO). The Acros profile has really lovely grain built in.
