So, I haven't been on it for a while, and i'm a member of the "I am the speedhunter" group...

So, checking new submissions today and there are a few very low quality screen captures of horrible drift cars (and, static, not even drifting)...

Someone has actually awarded the "artist" with a big flasshy award for excellent photography...

WTF?

Talk about the dumbing down of society...

Not really, no.

Art is subjective, photography aught to involve the taking of a photograph, not saving a jpg from a simulation/game on a PC.

The image may well be art, the artist may have 'created' it, but it's not a photograph...

Therefore, he/she shouldn't be awarded the honor for 'excellent photography' as NO photography occurred.

I can put together a fine meal of raw vegetables some may find delicious, but I shouldn't be awarded for excellent cooking, as no cooking happened!

They are screen captures of what appear to be static shots from a play station/Xbox game of some crudely rendered drift car.

I don't know about your group, but I have seen groups that have been flooded with off topic photos. That's why an active moderator is needed.

I would agree that the bar keeps moving downward (there and here). That said the main way we learn is to share our stuff and get feedback. But then again, a lot of people just want thumbs ups.... I made the mistake of here once suggesting slower shutter speeds would make the panning shots better. The anger I got, and insults, and personal challenges was surprising. Ironically the person being most belligerent about it actually doesn't post themselves - kind of ironic since they were one of the ones challenging me to post to prove I knew what I was talking about.

It takes some courage to post, and it takes courage to take suggestions or critic. But we also have to acknowledge what is good looking to ourselves isn't always the same that others are looking for in an image. it may not be the technical proficiency of the shot, but the subject that is appealing. In the particular shot... who knows. I don't get it... but somebody did...

I have never got an angry response when suggesting slower shutter speeds for panning shots or propeller planes and Helicopter blades, I do get ignored though and see the same people continue to post frozen pictures of wheels, backgrounds and blades, I just don’t bother anymore.

I don’t claim to be a great photographer, I know I am not, I am perfectly happy with constructive criticism.

I suppose that I should have shot this one with a slower shutter speed then?

I mean I did shoot it at a really fast 1/25s @ ƒ/29 and a focal length of 468mm. I could really do with a couple of ND filters for my Sigma 150-600. The only issue is that here in the UK the only round 95mm ND filters that I can actually find for sale are £230 each.

There are these two, a super quick 1/80s @ 600mm, plus a 50% crop, so an equivalent FoV of a 900mm lens on my 50D. It seems that you get issues when the aircraft can roll at 540°/s.

Alan

The last time I mentioned anything to anyone was about two weeks ago on Flickr,a guy shooting a prop plane at 1/2000th. He had nice equipment too, a Nikon D750 and a 300mm f2.8 lens, since then he has posted a bunch more razor sharp frozen Helicopters shot at 1/2000th. That was my I give up moment.

Those stunt planes give me fits, I haven't gone to enough Air Shows to master photographing them. 95mm ND filters are expensive over here too, seems crazy Sigma sells that big lens for less than $800 sometimes and a single filter can cost so much.

Not sure if you guy's are getting it...

The 'group' is I AM THE SPEEDHUNTER; it is for pro and amateur photographers to post high speed racing photos of vehicles, and high quality static's of rare or interesting vehicles...

The post I have a problem with is one where somebody has taken a screenshot (no camera or photography involved), saved as a jpg and posted it as a 'drift' photo.

1. The image is actually a screenshot from a video game (and extremely badly rendered and low res too).

2. This is NOT a photograph, so does NOT even belong in the group.

3. Someone awarded this person with "outstanding photography award", when there was NO PHOTOGRAPHY INVOLVED...and the image, had it of been a real photograph, is abysmally awful...

Still, I guess we now live in a world where "everyone gets a prize, even if it's just for turning up...

I think the collective human race needs a 'Darwin Award'!

Well after having a quick look through the group I would say that a high proportion of the images DON'T actually meet the criteria described above. But to be honest with you I don't understand why you are getting so wound up about it, and I really don't know what it is that you expect the members of POTN to do.

#3.. nothing was awarded, and I take it as a joke honestly.. the "award" is a joke, literally … I think that maybe the part you arent' getting..

I understand the frustration with people treating the group in a way you don't like, but again.. the whole thing with the car and the award is a joke.. it may not be very funny to some but that's all it was (in my opinion)
