The picture is pretty grainy but seeing your exif data I can see why. Must have been pretty low light to be using those settings.

Welcome to the forum!

This is a nice photo. I like this photo!

I'm assuming you're interested in knowing if this camera is any good. On this one photo, I see nothing wrong with it! I'll review this with the camera in mind primarily, but also with the photography and post processing secondarily. I extracted a little extra information from your image. You shot with Aperture Priority (Av) and used a 50mm lens. Post processing was done with Photoshop (Ps) on a Mac.

The photo is sharp. Eyes are good, lashes are sharp. You have nice shallow depth of field (DoF). At f/1.8, you have good control over the image. I like the backlighting; that with the shallow DoF gives it a dreamy quality. At 1/20s, I'm thinking you may have used a tripod, which is perfectly fine. There is no motion blur, which can happen with hand holding the camera at a low shutter speed. The focus appears to be spot on, and it captures good detail.

The photo could use a bit more light on her. If you were to shoot this again, you might consider having a reflector on your left highlighting the right side of her face (left side of the photo). One thing I've noticed with the Canon line is that for me the light metering under exposes by maybe a third of a stop, and sometimes more. When that happens I either handle it in post, or if appropriate I simply boost the exposure during the actual photography. Alternatively, this can be easily retouched in Lightroom (Lr) or Ps. I'd boost the exposure on the overall image, and then might boost it a bit more on her face. The bottom line is that this is what I'd expect to see out of a 5D.

The image is a little dull. Again, a little retouching could help enhance this. That said, I'll guess you were more interested in the ability of the camera and weren't interested in showing what it could do, just what it actually does. If you shoot in RAW, Lr and Ps discard the information from Canon. If you shoot in Jpeg, which I suspect you did not, then the Picture Style options can give you some predefined post processing looks.

"ready" commented about the grain. Yeah, there's a little noise, but that's easily remedied in Lr. Ps may handle that too, but I struggle with Ps.

I ran this through Lr just to see what I'd do with it and how much retouching it would need. It was what I would expect using a jpeg of an image taken with a 5D.

The Bottom Line:

I think the photo is good. From this one photo, I suspect you got a good camera.

Congratulations!

In my experience, women will rarely thank you for a sharp portrait that emphasises lines, pores and skin blemishes, particularly once they are past 25yo!

It's usually OK to do that with male portraits however.

It's just my opinion but I've always believed that it is entirely possible to be too close to your subject. ;-)a
