Thinking serious of getting a P&S with good zoom lens . Right now shooting with XSi and 70-200mm f/4L and 1.4x and standard 18-55mm . Getting tired of lens . I don’t photograph much now so looking to change for more simple camera usage but with good quality images and long zoom if possible . Need help deciding what to get but don’t want to break the bank . Under $700.00 .

This line of P&S by Canon is no longer a current product. But you can find cameras from the series (S90, S95, S100, S110, S120) used. Here is a currently listing on Amazon, so you can get a basic description of the camera.

I have had several models in the series, as a pocketable auto/manual exposure camera alternative to lugging a Canon dSLR kit around

How good is the image quality zooming out to say 50-60 yds ? I understand the 4.2x , is it good on wildlife compared to a fixed lens ?

Thanks for the info and link . Have you shot birds or wildlife closeup and are the images good quality for print ?

I am not a wildlife shooter. I would never try to use a P&S to shoot wildlife, the focal length range to support a superzoom equivalent is just counter to the concept of a pocketable camera.
I would only consider a bridge camera as alternative to dSLR for shooting birds or wildlife. But it is bulky for its need to support superzoom FL equivalent.
A Sony RX10 has 24-600mm (35mm Equivalent) but it is $1600 and 5.2 x 3.7 x 5.7" and 2.4 lbs.

Be careful, six of the 10 cameras in this article have small sensors, they do not all have similar sized sensors...and sensor size does matter for freedom from noise in low light

More camera to look into https://www.shutterbug.com …eras-getting-close-action (external link)

If you can handle the pure bulk, the Nikon Coolpix P900 (5.5 in. x 4.1 in. x 5.5 in.) sounds nice, with a P&S sized sensor (1/ 2.3 in.)

bannedPermanently

Think of this in terms of three basic requirements: reasonable price, reasonable quality( IQ, specs, build) and long zoom.

You can only have two. Your choice.

5D3, 7D2, EF 16-35 f/2.8L, EF 24-70 f/2.8L II, EF 24-105 f/4L, EF 70-200 f/2.8L II, EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L II, EF 1.4x III, Sigma 150mm macro, Lumix LX100 plus a cupboard full of bags, tripods, flashes & stuff.

Many of the "steps" in cameras within a line, say the G7X line, often have the same internals but the improvements add features. So instead of the latest and greatest, you might want to look at something one generation back from the current model and refurbished. The G7X II for instance is a well reviewed camera and is available from Canon refurbished for $520 until November 30th.

See https://shop.usa.canon.com …-g7-x-mark-ii-refurbished (external link) for the details. Again, in the fine print at the bottom it reads

$110 Instant Savings - Offer valid November 3, 2019 12:00 a.m. through November 30, 2019 11:59 p.m. ET.

I would not use a point and shoot for wildlife.

I understand and respect that answer . Main reason i'm looking to go P&S is because i'm close to retirement , i'm not a big wildlife or birding photographer . I've got away from photography so much now that ifor me it will be just occasional visit to local duck ponds and wildlife park close by . But mainly to just have a good camera with a zoom lens that zooms out like maybe to a 400mm-600mm lens . The G7X II maybe right up my road cause even tho I want a P&S I still want quality images worth printing . Thanks for your input !
