The lens does have design problems though, it's not perfect and there are better lenses out there. It vignettes a bit more than other lenses wide open, the focus is not lightning fast as some of the newer lenses, and it sucks at f/2.8 Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I guess I made the assumption that it's for a FF camera. If I were looking for a wide for a crop, the 10-22 EF-S lens is better optically than the 17-40. Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Just not very wide on APS-C, about 24mm. Again, from about 2003 until 2016 this was my go to wide angle. And most of that time (10 years, 2003 - 2013) I had no full frame bodies. The widest I was getting was on the 1D APS-H 1.3x crop factor.

It came out about 17 years ago and now new and improved lenses are available but for the price its still a great deal. 1DX MK II, 5D MKIV x2, 24L II, 35L II, 50L, 85LIS, 100LIS Macro, 135L, 16-35LIS, 24-105LIS II, 70-200LIS, 100-400LIS II

wyntastr Senior Member More info | Nov 24, 2019 12:03 | #11 I was looking for a nice wide angle zoom to take to Arizona last year, but was on a fairly limited budget. I considered the 16-35, but it was much more expensive than the 17-40. The main use was for landscape and tripod work, so f/4 was fine on the open end. I found a nice, used copy and it did not let me down in the least. It stayed on the 6D for just about the whole trip. IMHO, it's a fantastic performer for the price they go for now. 1D X - 6D - 1D Mk III - Rokinon 8 fisheye - EF 17-40 f/4L - EF 50 f/1.8 Mk I - EF 85 f/1.8 - EF 70-200 f/4L - EF 80-200 f/2.8L Magic Drainpipe - EF 300mm f/2.8 IS L - EF 500mm f/4 IS L - EF 100-400L

It has internal zoom and focus. So no zoom creep to worry about. AF should not be an issue with USM focus motor and being wide angle lens. One of the lens not to worry about build issues while buying used. I think, it's only issue is corners wide open at 17mm for non demanding users. Canon RP with 24-240mm

Jan 06, 2020 20:56 | #14 I had one for a short time on a crop sensor but the focal range felt awkward. Definitely better suited for the full frame in my opinion. With the impending forum closure, please consider joining the unofficial adjunct to the POTN forum, The POTN Forum Facebook Group

ScottM Goldmember More info | Jan 07, 2020 07:43 | #15 I owned this lens for a few years before upgrading to the EF 16-35 f/4 IS. For the money, it's a very good wide angle lens for full frame. I never tried it on any of my crop sensor bodies.
