Has anyone had their 5d4 modified to add the voice memo feature? It’s a firmware change. I miss this feature that was on my 1d bodies. Canon says it’s a five day turnaround in the US. Thanks.

If it was firmware only you wouldn't have to send it to Canon.

It was never stated it was only a firmware update, and doesn't really matter. ;)

For $100 and shipping, if it is something one misses in a camera, it isn't a big cost to add it so why not do it?

I find it interesting that only one of the two features can be active at once, and one has to be removed to get the other.

It could indeed be only a firmware change, but one Canon keeps private in order to make money on the change. The camera already has a mic, and Canon certainly doesn't have to add a new button to get the feature. Plus the price alone almost guarantees that Canon isn't tearing the camera apart, and has to cover shipping costs back to the owner. But again none of that matters, the question was about the feature itself and its usefulness.

I spoke with Canon service and it is firmware only but evidently a special type that isn't overwritten when "normal" firmware versions are updated - just like the CLog mod. The only qualifier is that the Canon Log firmware isn't installed or they will conflict.

Sounds like something for the Magic Lantern people to investigate.

It seems odd that they would "conflict", but rather they have 2 different inhouse firmware versions, each built with one or the other turned on, and they don't have a firmware version with both built in. But of course that may not quite be logical because if they could build a firmware version that had both, they could charge a $200 service with both, and they don't. So perhaps they do conflict somewhere in the bowels of the code.

I'm not familiar with the Canon Log feature but the voice memo feature uses the Rate button for control. Does C Log use this button also? That may be the conflict. Otherwise you would think there would be a workaround to utilize both options. Another possibility is that there is only a limited amount of "hidden protected" memory and that both features could work if added on to the normal firmware. But then Canon couldn't make any profit from the feature.
