I had the 40D - great camera and went to the 7D2 - LOVED it HUGE upgrade - IMO amazing camera.
I played with my friends 6D and liked the 7D2 MUCH better for features I wanted and for general feel (I also shoot mainly sports and pets).
I wanted better low light performance and went to the 5D4 - love it - but miss the faster frames per second - can't afford the 1DX2 (yet). So, yeah, as others have mentioned, the 5D3 would also be a serious contender.

I have a photographic memory, just wish I'd remember to take the lens cap off more often!
1DXII - Canon 300 2.8 IS, 100-400 II, 70-200/2.8 II, 24-70 2.8 II, 85 1.8 - 1.4x II - F-Stop Lotus Backpack - ThinkTank Retrospective 20 & Speed Racer V2 - Peak Design Slide Flickr Collection (external link)

I would go for the 7D Mark II. Also, if budget allows, try going for a second hand 5D Mark IV!

It really depends on what you want to shoot. I have both the 6D & the 7DII. I like to shoot landscapes. I WAY prefer the 6D for that. High ISO is so much more usable. With a higher ISO and a fast prime (I have the 50mm 1.4) the thing practically sees in the dark.

6D, 7D2, T4i, 16-35mm f/4L IS, 100mm Macro f/2.8L IS, 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS, 50mm f/1.4 IS, EF-S 55-250, 1.4 II TC, Kenko Extension Tubes, MeFoto Globetrotter & Roadtrip Tripods, Lightroom CC, Photoshop CC
