I was wondering if anyone was using the 5DS R for birding and how you like it? I currently use the 7DII with the 100-400 v2 and am getting good results. However, I was hoping for better detail when cropping. Thanks.

You won't actually get any better detail when cropping with the 5Ds as it's pixel density is identical to the 7DII, ie: a 7D2 sensor is a 1.6x crop from the center of a 5Ds.

The only possible advantage with the 5Dsr is the "r" will have a lower power AA filter effect,. but now we are just talking about a middling difference.

The 5Ds/5D3 AF system is very capable, but I'd put the 7D2 just slightly above the 5DS/5D3.

All that said, it is a perfectly capable birding body, there are many examples in the 5Ds/r thread. I was happy quite with the 5D3 for birding.

The 5D4 at 30MP may be a better option. I never unstood Canon's implementation of "removing" the AA filter. It is still there on the 5DS R. It just gets cancelled...weird...

I would think that the 90D would be the current detail when crop champ with it's very high pixel count per mm. I have never shot with the 90D but from those that are, the images look stunning.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

I agree some of the 90D images look great. The only thing making me hesitate in ordering one is the AF system. Sounds like it tracks well in live view but not so great using the OVF. I like BIF and just can't see being happy doing that in live view.

A close friend of mine uses the Canon 5DS R for birding, and he loves it. . He has used many different bodies over the years, including Canon's top-shelf offerings such as the 1 series and the 5D4.

He prefers the 5DS R to any other Canon body because of the greater amount of detail that can be captured with the huge pixel count. . He gets close enough to frame the birds the way he wants to and generally does not crop.

Thank you Tom. Do you know what your friends go-to lens is on the 5DS R?

For birds, he uses the Canon 600mm f4 IS version 2
