My old Canon G5 allows me to add my own photos to the camera's memory and assign one of these pictures to appear as the start-up screen image. I added a photo that showed my name, phone number and email address with the hopes that it might help with the camera's recovery in the event of loss or theft.

My 60D doesn't seem to allow me to add this little bit of customization. Does anyone here know of a way to access the 60D's stash of start-up images and add one of my own? That is, some way that doesn't involve the real chance of me bricking my camera.

Thank you, Pekka! I'm sure some members here might have imagined that POTN might begin winding down. But that doesn't make the news any less disappointing. So generous of you to allow us to go along for the ride. As a result you gave us a way to help each other become better photographers. But there's still so much more to learn.

I've had a 60D for many years and never encountered anyway to change the start-up image. The 60D preceded the G5 by about 4 years and it would be unlikely for Canon to go that long and put in features. Something like that would be in the firmware and the last update is late November 2016.

There was some 3rd party software called Magic Lantern that loaded off the SD card on startup. It provided a vast number of features that weren't in the standard Canon offering. But I do not see any related feature in the 60D version of ML. (See https://builds.magiclantern.fm/index.html (external link)).

I suspected that this was something that us mere mortals couldn't do. Just seemed like an easy bit of extra added security for the G5, though it probably seemed a bit gimmicky for a DSLR with a lot of other features crammed in there already. Didn't really want to load up Magic Lantern but I didn't see that ability as one of its added features anyway.

Thanks anyhow, John.

Not sure if you were around but in the good old days of shooting 35mm Kodachrome I carried a handkerchief with my name and address and that was always the first picture taken. Kodachrome in those days was mailed off to Kodak where things sometimes got mixed up in processing and/or shipping. Something similar would work in digital.

I try to remember to do something like that with a jpeg added to my memory cards. But then eventually I reformat the card and wipe it out and it may be awhile before I realize that it's missing. :-x It's also too easy for someone else to erase it.
