I am just looking at the capture one upgrade (from 12 to 20!) and the list of improvements. They look subtle and a little underwhelming for a major upgrade (at quite some cost). Can anybody report some first hand experience?

I have the subscription so there's no upgrade cost for me, but there are a few things I already really like.

1. Crop tool. I never liked that you couldn't crop to the center. You had to grab one corner, then grab the other corner. Now you can press alt and crop to the center of the photo.
2. Auto Advance. That will really speed up culling photos. You can auto advance after changing rating or color.
3. The HDR tool now has whites and blacks as well as highlights and shadows.
4. The color editor allows you to click and drag to adjust.
5. Something weird: for some reason, the recent files list never worked when accessing it by right-clicking the pinned icon on my task bar. It always said the file couldn't be found. It works in this version.

So, probably not anything you'd want to pay a lot of money for, but on a subscription I'm really happy about these features.

Thanks Scott. Very helpful. Any comment on noise control? I am quite happy with what I have in V12 - is there really a substantial improvement?

I have not looked into the noise reduction at all. I'll take a look if I get time today.
