I need some 6D and 7D2 compatible memory cards for holiday videos and also want to maximize burst mode speed. Should I get the latest fast cards with the idea that the cameras might not fully support latest standards but will still benefit from top speed cards, even if not able to take full advantage of them? Should I go CF for 7d2?

Yes. CF is noticeably faster writing to the card thus clearing the buffer faster than SD. My comparison is between Lexar 64GB 150 MB/s (1000x) SDXC and Sandisk 64GB Extreme Pro 160 MB/s UDMA 7 CF. Switching to CF made a big difference for dance, airshows and birds.

Also note that if you have both SD & CF cards in the 7D2 and are writing images to both cards for backup, I believe it will slow CF down to SD bus speed. If you want to maximize CF speed the camera needs to be configured to write to CF only, or just have the CF card inserted.

For the 7d2 buy the best Compact Flash card. The newest type of card that size are CFast cards. Do not buy a CFast card for either of these cameras. They kind of look the same, but they are not compatible. The connectors are different.

Whatever you buy, know your source. I suggest you buy from someone like B&H or Best Buy. See B&H for a CF listing; https://www.bhphotovideo.com …tt=compact%20flash%20card (external link).

In the case of Best Buy, memory is purchased at the corporate level directly from the importer, probabaly thousands of cards at a time. The cards are then disseminated down to the local stores. No middle entity in the transaction and hence less chance of getting a counterfeit card. Stay away from eBay vendors.

Thanks for input, Phillip. Good to know and I will definitely get a CF for the 7D2.

Good advice! I generally go with B&H or Amazon, although eBay is sometimes tempting. Best Buy is definitely a choice I will consider.

SanDisk Extreme Pro 160MB/s for both SD and CF cards look good. I'm thinking I'll get 64GB cards. These will be more than I need for photography but probably will just afford some safe margin and convenience for video. I am still mulling over and might go for 128GB cards. Opinions?
