I just got a small, unexpected windfall and wonder what extra item I should buy with it.
I just bought a factory refurb Canon 50D.
Most of my photography is indoor macro and still life with the rest being divided between urban and nature photography in and around the Cleveland, OH area.

  • light meter
  • a third (I already have two) 24"x24" softbox and boom (for still life)
  • Sigma 17-50mm lens

The first two will help my still life work, the latter my outdoor stuff.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Hello Temma from a fellow Clevelander - I'm over in Lyndhurst ;-)a.

I assume you already have a nice tripod. Some small items: lens hood, cable release. If you want to spend a lot more Canon has some wonderful macro lenses. I own the 100mm L f/2.8 and not only is it a great macro but it's a wonderful walkaround lens.

I've actually got all of those things now, although my macro lens is a Tokina, not a Canon.

Any suggestions regarding my list?

Ooops - my bad. I thought that was a list of what you already had.
There are a lot of good flash meters out there. Minolta made several excellent models.

I'm thinking about one of the Minolta v IVs.

I have the Minolta Auto Meter IV as well as the old analog Sekonic L-398 which was always an excellent workhorse back in my wedding days. It has no flash capability though. Gossen also makes very good meters.

I don't want to spend $300-400 on the meter alone, so I'll probably go with a used Minolta or lower level digital Sekonic.

Do you have
a macro focusing rail (one analogous to this -- not necessarily endorsing this one)... https://www.bhphotovideo.com …5S8MOSzI_SxRoC4moQAvD_BwE (external link)

I think any of those would be excellent choices. Dodd sells a lot of used gear, Pixel Connection might. Keh.com has a large inventory of a variety of things and they actually have a used Minolta in stock right now, although it is in BGN condition:

I vote for the Sigma 17-50mm. I owned that years ago and it's a phenomenal lens. I don't see any use for a light meter with a digital camera; you can check the back screen at any time to make sure the exposure is right. Admittedly I know very little about off camera lighting, but I don't really see three lights being necessary for most things. Go for the Sigma, I think you'll be happy.
