I know both are amazing but I'm liking the 85 the most. The 28-70 weight bothers me but more versatile. Shoot mainly family pictures, portraits. Would like your opinion. Thanks and hope all is well.

28-70.

I have the 24-70 f/2.8 and 85L II. Despite the slower aperture, the zoom gets used loads more. I’d sell the prime before the zoom, and logically would buy the zoom before the prime :)

Constant f/2 would sort of help to overcome the stigma that comes with the f/2.8 aperture over a “boring” focal range. Only thing that holds me back is the bulk of the thing.

It's got to boil down to your kit, your style and your wants.

In my case, I'm content with the 85mm 1.2 ii and Tamron 85mm 1.8 VC partly because I have the RF 50mm 1.2 also. I shoot a lot at f/2 to f/6 with my 1.2 lenses, but it's worth pointing out that no f/2.8 zoom or f/2 will help the way the RF 50mm 1.2 did in October at a ocean overlook wedding. The sun already set, and due to where the wedding party needed to stand for composition, adding light with my 360s or speedlites didn't give an appealing look. So I asked the help to shut off the lights, stood back a few paces and pushed the aperture to f/1.2 with a hint extra ISO. It really made the difference.

So in a nutshell. I will always have at least one f/1.2 lens in my bag.

If I was looking at the two options you listed, which one I chose would depend on whether I had an f/1/2 already. At the moment, since I have two f/1.2 lenses, I'm treating myself to lighter loads. I tend to leave my 70-200mm to the side just in case now, rather than a primary lens. I work more with 85mm lenses, or 135mm.

I removed all my battery grips to shed weight ... really don't need them.

So the RF 28-70mm would be purely a luxury splurge if I ever buy one. Something I may use once a month. But for someone who absolutely can put one to use daily or weekly, maybe they could get by with just that one lens alone. I could see someone doing an entire wedding or family portrait session with just that lens, and maybe a 2nd lens for backup and maybe an extra focal length.

This will be my first Rf lens. I have the adapter with my 135 f2 which I love. The 28-70 will do everything I need but not liking the weight as stated earlier. I had the ef 70-200 and it weighed around the same, hated shooting with it because of that reason. Thanks.

If the EOS R is used without a battery grip, the weight with the RF 28-70mm should be similar to a 5D iv with a 70-200mm. The smaller EOS R size should mellow the package size.

Is only 200g apart from the 85L, not a drastic difference.

If you hated shooting with a lens of the same weight you are pondering purchasing, haven’t you just answered your question?
