Hi Folks

Not sure of what the bottleneck might be, but in the last 3 days, the Forum response in navigating between Posts and Images being rendered in Posts has been very slow, taking + 30 secs for a Post to Open and then all the Photos are blank as they load very slowly, taking minutes not seconds. This has made the Forum unusable from a practical, perspective and I was hoping that some temporary glitch might have been the cause, but it has been almost 3 days now.-?

This is on A Win 10 Pro PC, i7 8 Core, 32GB RAM, 512GB SSD and my Broadband shows DL at 46 Mbs/sec with Uploads at 18 Mbs/sec with no issues reported by my ISP (Optus).

I have tried MS Edge, IE11 and Firefox with the same result. I have also tried Safari on my wife's iMac as well all on the same Optus Broadband Service.

All other programs and websites appear to be behaving as expected, it just seems related to POTN - help.

Is this behaviour being experienced by anyone else?

Thanks

Dennis

EDIT: I have run CCleaner to clean out Cookies etc. and that has not helped.

I have seen no slowdown, but I am probably way closer to the servers than you. I believe they are in Florida, but that is up to the host not POTN.

Malwarebytes free version is also a good thing to try.

Second thing is to try a different DNS server other than your ISP's DNS. There are a couple of free ones that work well. Google Free DNS is probably the easiest one to try.

Those two steps are easy enough to try and should give you an idea where to start to figure out how to solve the problem.

Edit: A shortcut way to try different DNS paths is to run the browser Opera in Turbo mode. If you have a problem that can be corrected by changing your DNS server, often Turbo Opera in Turbo mode will correct the path problem, but it does not really solve it.

Thanks Philip - the symptoms and no other reports make it look like it is something very close to home, I was just hoping...:-)

Cheers

I added one comment to my post above. You can cheat using the program Opera in Turbo mode to check DNS problems. It is easier to do that than changing the DNS server, so you may want to try that.

Thanks Philip - I am going to try my iPad with its SIM card/4G so that bypasses my NBN Cable Broadband Connection to my ISP and see how I get on.

Cheers

I downloaded the new Opera Browser. Apparently it no longer has turbo functions. It does have a free VPN. Using the VPN should do the same thing.

Just tried the iPad/4G option and again, the Forum still runs sluggishly, so I'll have to dig deeper.

are you at all familiar with commandline? wonder what's your ping time to the server...

type cmd in the windows search box and then in the black window type: ping www.photography-on-the.net

e.g.

C:\Users\Bob>ping www.photography-on-the.net

Pinging www.photography-on-the.net [198.178.127.80] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 198.178.127.80: bytes=32 time=215ms TTL=50
Reply from 198.178.127.80: bytes=32 time=215ms TTL=50

Reply from 198.178.127.80: bytes=32 time=215ms TTL=50

Ping statistics for 198.178.127.80:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 215ms, Maximum = 215ms, Average = 215ms

[215mS is the time taken to get from computer to the POTN server & back...]

Thanks Joseph, I did this and got the following:

I also note that it is taking several seconds to upload even small JPGs compared to before the problem started.

One thing to remember, many photos are hosted on Flickr and other hosts that are displayed on this site. nardes's loading problems might not be with photography-on-the-net. It is possible that images not loading correctly may be due to the other hosts. The routing problems may be to Flickr or another server.

If that is the case pinging Photography-on-the-net will not indicate a problem. You probably need to ping the other host sites.

Thanks Philip, I noticed that it was the POTN Hosted photos that were taking longer to load than Flickr photos. The POTN Hosted Phots were downloading 1 line at a time like the old Ranger Landers on the Moon back in the early 1960's.:-)

Here is a tracert screenshot that appears to show my problem - I just need to read up on what it all means.

Thank you everyone for your help, I really appreciate your replies.:-)

Cheers

Dennis

I haven't had to deal with this type of problem in years, so I may be a little rusty. Since you know how to do command line commands, try flushing the DNS Cache. At the same place you did the trace try typing in
ipconfig /flushdns

That will make the computer reestablish the routing to POTN. It is one thing to try. Like I have said, I have not dealt with this type of problem in years, so you may wish to look up that command before trying it to make sure I have it right.
