I haven't priced the repair cost yet, just discovered that as it sat on the shelf for the last year, my 1D4 mirror assembly now gets stuck at shutter release. :(

I was considering selling it, but now? Will I even recoup the cost of repair?

Canon no longer services the 1D4. I have a local guy that likely will, clearly I'll have to ask for a price. The going rate for a used one has been plummeting. Maybe $600.00 for one with a new shutter these days?

Interesting question. Generally speaking with regards to the camera / imaging market, it will be interesting to see what happens after this Christmas season when recipients of new cameras and self-upgraders push their old product into the used market. For some will it even be worth their time and effort?

There are no APSH bodies offered, so the 1d4 price will remain fairly stable, as there isn't any really direct contender to it.

I don't think the 1D4 has dropped quite that much. Obviously it all depends on how much a new shutter box will cost you but if the aftermarket shops can match what Canon used to charge there should still be room tomget it fixed and still recoup a bit of cash. Option 2 would be do the research and then sell the carcass with a repair quite attached. The 1DX is still fetching a pretty penny so a refurb 1D4 might have more value than think.

It surprises me when I look at used prices how many people own cameras for years and hardly use them. I saw a used mint 1d4 with less than 11,000 shutter count for £600. Barely run in. I love my 1d4 it's well served it's time, it's scratched, dented and looks a state and I would replace it for another rather than have it repaired.

Hard to say - if it's the shutter that's broken then that's probably the most time-consuming part on a camera to replace (i.e. take everything off & you're left with a shutter on the frame)
Having a quick look on ebay for shutter part there's nothing standing out as being "new" but you could probably get one for around US$50 or so. Take into account at least a couple of hours of tech time and you're probably at $250 or so already. What does the camera do if you ask it to do a mirror lockup? does the flappy-thing go up? Does it do a live-view?
Maybe just needs to be used a bit?

mirror box on it's own looks very pricy. Sing out if you need a parts catalog.

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

Yup, you're right on the money with that guesstimate.

I sometimes see people trying to sell them for $750 or $800, but they sit around for a looonnnggg time without anyone buying them. . The ones that actually sell are the ones where people are asking $600 or $650.

I think you'll come out ahead if you do have the sticky mirror fixed.

It probably just needs a bit of lube. . Independent repair guys, especially ones that work on the side out of their home and barely have any overhead costs, are extremely reasonable. . When my 6D had some electronic problems last year my repair guy fixed it for just $60.

.

"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

The good news is twofold:

- My Local guy was happy to look at it.
- He's not charging me much at all to get it back up and running. No problem with the hardware, just in dire need of cleaning, tightening, lubricating etc.

I have never been one for preventative maintenance with my cameras. I just shoot them until I sell them or they die. Well, I've not had one die yet,. ;) But in this case, after all the trips this camera has taken and the in-climate conditions I have shot it in, it makes sense that it was about to rattle apart! Maybe I'll drop off my 7D2 and 5D4 for an oil change and spark plugs!

You are very fortunate to have a guy you feel is capable of doing the job!!! Not everyone has that advantage.

You should also have him check the brakes and the radiator while he has them in the shop! :p

Any reason you didn't jump on it to replace yours and do you know if it's still up for sale?
