Thanks for the tip: just figured out how to do it on the 5D4: bit more complicated as you have to disable anti-flicker first. But in manual, can set it so it's over 30 secs. While my manual method needs disclaimers of needing to be careful, it does let me see the action of the AF mirror assembly underneath:-)

Take a shot at below flash sync speed to see if it happens when the shutter fully opens\closes vs 1st\2nd curtain. Might narrow it down.

THIS IS A LOW QUALITY PREVIEW. Please log in to see the good quality stuff.

the leaves are like venetian blinds, but are only held onto the mechanism that goes up & down by two small rivets at one end...

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:

It is the shutter.

Look here to see some examples of Sony A7III shutter fail. Not exactly matching your example but close enough to see that it is very likely the problem with your 6D.

The dark area is on the left of the frame and is much more clearly defined. There is an example with a streak too.
It's a Sony shutter so unlikely to exactly match a canon shutter fail.

Look here to see streaks caused by a 6D shutter fail:

By using mirror lockup then taking photos, use BULB or a 1 or 2 second exposure so you can watch the shutter moving.
While it is too fast to see what is happening by eye, there's a chance you may see a shutter leaf in an unusual position at some point.
All leafs should end up in the same position so any variation confirms a problem.

The failure / closure / behaviour of so many image hosting threads means a lot of examples of shutter failures posted on POTN are no longer visible.

Some that still are, showing a broad range of effects from shutter failures.

I like the idea of using the mirror lockup and a very long exposure (>3 sec) while taking a video of the shutter opening and closing. You can advance the frames manually and inspect them. The normal video is too slow to catch the curtain motion, but with a bit of luck you can catch the curtain mid frame. If you have access to a video camera with slo-mo or super slo-motion you can improve your chances considerably...

"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".
