Just got a 6dmk2 and I'm wondering about it's durability. It feels very frail; like hollow plastic. I am afraid of gripping it too firmly for fear of cracking it.

How tough or durable is the 6dmk2?

p.s. My point of comparison is with my Canon 7dmk2. That camera has a solid feel to it. I also have two inexpensive Cameras; T3i and T6. My 6dmk2 feels closer to my T6.

I had to double-check it wasn't April 1st when I read that :-P

No, they're not as tough as the 7D2, I would assume (never held one but they used less metal in the contsruction vs the 7D2) but there's no way you're going to crack it by squeezing. If you do, remind me never to shake your hand

I can't speak specifically about the 6D Mark 2, but I have its predecessor, the original 6D. . I believe these bodies are very similar with respect to build quality, so I will tell you of my experiences with my 6D.

I will say that the 6D is not very durable at all. . I am used to better built cameras like the 1D series. . I was kind of shocked when I first got my 6D and felt how cheap and flimsy it was.

Some things have gone wrong with my 6D, and I think it is because of the overall build quality and lack of durability and weather sealing. . The multi-directional button on the back that controls the LCD playback functions only works in some directions, but not others. . It goes from left to right but cannot go from right to left. . It also goes from bottom to top but cannot go from top to bottom.

Sometimes the camera skitzes out. . Like it's got some kind of electronic glitch. . When it does this none of the readouts show up on the top panel, nor in the viewfinder. . I have to turn it off, then turn it back on, to get things to work again. . I suspect this is because it is not at all made to keep the rain or fine sand out, and that some little grit or water got into it and causes things to glitch out from time to time.

There was also a time when the rear dial wouldn't turn. . I mean it was stuck fast! . Eventually I was able to turn it again, but felt quite a bit of resistance. . I suspect a bit of sand got in between the dial itself and the body housing, causing the dial to jam up. . Whatever it was eventually worked itself out entirely, because the rear dial now spins freely, just like it's supposed to.

I am beginning to feel like I can't trust my 6D out in the sandy beach or sandy desert areas, can't trust it in forest fire conditions (airborne ash), and can't trust it in the rain or snow or dense fog. . So what situations are left in which I can trust it? . Not many. . Outdoor photography is seldom, if ever, sunny and dry and clean. . So I am going to be looking to sell the body soon, at a discount because of the problems its lack of durability has caused.

.

Thanks! Hopefully the 6dmk2 was improved a bit over the original 6d.

Sadly, it's not an inexpensive camera. One would expect at least a bit better build quality for that price. I know it's not a 5dmk4, but it does cost more than the 90d and the rest of the Rebel series. Feels like the only reason I paid more was for a sensor that is s few millimeters larger.

I won't pretend to assume the 6dmk2 should have been built as well as my 7dmk2, but I feel it should have been built more solid, especially around the top viewfinder area (feels hollow).

p.s. I also own a Nikon D750 and feel it too was not built to traditional Nikon standards. I use a Nikon D3500 for work; feels plasticky and cheap, but the D750 feels a tad better. Not so between the 6dmk2 and my other Canon bodies.

Hopefully this is all just a perception issue on my behalf and the 6dmk2 will be a durable camera. Hopefully.

I am very surprised to hear all this about the 6D! I would have thought the quality would have been right up there with the 5D series bodies.

I've had my 6D for about six years (having come from the original 7D) and I've never thought that it felt in any way flimsy/frail/cheap. I think the build quality is great. I've looked after it and it all works fine...touch wood.

I have a 6DII and 80D and between those two, I feel like the build quality is marginally better on the 6DII. I've never felt the build quality was sub-par but I've also never used a 7D or "higher".

I guess the feel of a camera is very subjective. I can't say I have any complaints about my 6DII in that respect; it feels substantial and well constructed to me. My 5DIV (which I recently sold) did feel a bit more robust, but not hugely so. I would certainly put the 6DII above my old 5DII (which had a card slot door that felt like it was flexing if I gripped the camera tightly) and above my recently acquired EOS R. I can't comment on how the 6DII stands up to harsh conditions because I always carry a rain sleeve in case things get rough, and anyway most of my shooting is indoors these days.

I guess what surprised me me was how hollow the viewfinder/prism area feels. I wanted a body with no pop up flash thinking it would be sturdier than a body with pop up flash.

Not saying it doesn't take awesome pictures; results are spectacular (identical to the images I get with my Nikon D750).
