Wouldn't it be better to calibrate the monitor and let the calibrator create and assign a new profile?

I run across far more complaints about 'print comes out too dark compared to monitor appearance of the photo'...a bad adjustment of Brightness and Contrast (monitors set in factory to be seen in bright retail store lighting!). I find few complaints about 'the presentations of (pick a hue) comes out too (pick a complaint). Methinks there is more attention paid to color reproduction via software by folks than it deserves! And too little attention to fundamental monitor adjustment of Brightness and Control via the buttons that are part of a monitor. Just saying.

OTOH, the OP post about 'new monitor, old profile' is one that seems to be seldom discussed, and is worth some attention (vs. almost none) on the forum.

I think that's a good point. While I have owned calibrators and emphatically recommend them (they're not even that expensive!), one of the big things they're doing for you is helping you set your monitor correctly before you apply any software profiling (which at that point is custom at least). There's a reason they ask what settings your monitor gives you control over and then ask you to adjust them.
