(i did a search, could not find an answer)

I have an old (version 1) 24-70 2.8L that needs repair. (pretty sure it's the flex cable)

Who is reputable and does repair on old lenses?

I went through a similar situation, recently. My starting point was calling/emailing older photographers and camera shops in an ever-expanding radius from my home. I hope it offers you some encouragement that I did manage to find someone to work on a 1950s vintage Voigtlander 6x6 folding camera. Surely you will find someone who can work on your much newer lens. Good luck!

I highly recommend Perfect Image in Lancaster County, PA (website below). They have kept my Kodak Retina IIIC going for many years. I haven’t had need for them to do lens work but they are authorized by Canon which speaks for itself. By the way, they do not farm out the work. Many “local” camera stores simply tack on $100 and send out your gear. In doing so you’ve lost control of the repair process.

Pentax Shooter: Thanks for your encouragement.

John,
Thanks. I have filled out and submitted the info/estimate request. As I understand it, the flex cable problem on this lens is a common problem. They should be familiar with it. I've been looking at the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 as a replacement, but the Canon 24-70 I have is still in excellent shape and I think worth saving. Thanks again.

Ouch, I have the even Older version, the old Film version before Crop sensors inspired Canon to widen the view to 24 mm. I have the 28-70 2.8 L, and I was hoping to NEVER hear such issue with that lens. So far so good.

Will be watching post to see your repair outcome.

Mike

I am not familiar with your version, and do not know about older Canon film lenses. However, It may not be applicable to yours. The flex cable is found in modern autofocus lenses. I do not know if your older film version has one.
