Yeah you need a polarizing filter and I'd recommend the drive to Johnson ridge; Got to the pull out are BEFORE the visitors center (1/8th a mile before visitors center). There's a parking lot with a view. Prettymuch anywhere in there will give you a clear shot of the mountain. Then hangout and enjoy the sunset, and the ELKS if you go the 2nd/3rd week of September. Even better, if you can adjust your sleep schedule, bring a lawn chair and enjoy the night skies and get yourself some shots of the milkyway over the mountain. It's also a shorter drive back to I-5 compared to the east side, but you'll have more people on the road on the way there, but most bug out before sunset.
