I had no trouble at all fixing tiles. Right now my Win 10 install is on the surface very similar to my 7 install...

Rest assured that my comments about the start menu and tiles were not directed at you. Rather, you seem to have met most if not all the challenges and resolved them to your satisfaction.

I’m in the business (“so to speak”), and I’m amazed how many people make the move from Win 7 to Win 10 and the only thing they complain about is the start menu and the tiles feature. Perhaps it is just the nature of these forums in that we see predominately the complainers, not people that applaud the upgrade process and the end result.

I hate the tiles. I originally upgraded my system to Win10 because when I work from home, I have to VPN and my company disallowed Win7 systems from using the VPN. So I upgraded. I had already had it on my business laptop so was familiar with the quirks. If it was really bad, I could always just run it in a VM and VPN through there.

The biggest issue that I see is the disjointed control panel/settings bit. Not everything in the control panel can be set via the new Settings interface. They need to fix that, but at least I can still just open the old style control panel and do what I need from there.

The tiles/start menu you can get rid of those there and it's mostly like the old style start menu. But I don't really use the start menu ever. I have all the programs I use pinned to my taskbar as that's much faster.

Windows 8 was far worse than 10 though. There are definitely some great tablet features in 10, but it's far less annoying to configure 10 to suit a desktop/non-touch system.

This will sound crazy, but give the Microsoft "God mode" a try. See https://www.techrepublic.com …e-god-mode-in-windows-10/ (external link) for the very simple setup.

Quoting from the link

God Mode is a special option long available in Windows that gives you quick access to most of the applets and commands from Control Panel. As such, God Mode--or Windows Master Control Panel--is a useful time-saver that can spare you from having to hunt through different windows and screens to find the Control Panel command you want.

I'm aware of this, but don't find it any more useful than just opening the Control Panel.

Well I guess Bill Gates and I share the fact that we won’t get a “Like”!

... I have all the programs I use pinned to my taskbar as that's much faster.....

I've been doing that since XP at least,. yes we could make our own "tool bars" as far back as that, that would allow more than the simplified task bar would allow, (perhaps even as far back Win 98, but my memory may be off on that.) I have mine cascading, a lot like a second "start" menu,. but only populated with the things I need fast access to, and in subcategories I made.
I'm not sure I will be able to pull this particular trick off again in Windows 10, we shall see.

As each version of Windows as come along, since 3.1 I've found my need to tinker with it has become less and less.
I no longer have apps for controlling the background, for specific gaming hardware, for setting up multiple monitors, for putting the task bar where I want it, etc etc.
Each version just seems to get easier to use, simpler to customize and able to do all those things quickly and easily with out having to dive into deep system menus etc.

I've found Windows 10 the simplest and easiest of all, for me to just works and has given me the least amount of grief or issues and requires the least amount of care or maintenance.

Now I'm not sure if that is me changing how I work, i.e less and less in the OS and more in software, and my knowledge has increased exponentially or if it's because Windows has changed and improved, but I suspect it's a combination.

HAL always sets himself up on all my PCs and Macs at the start.....-? :-). During certain times, I've tried adding other cool 3D renderings with my desktops....but HAL is so classic. Have rewatched 2001 in UHD, and also saw how futuristic it was in that they even show computer tablets (albeit IBM). Also to follow up on needing to keep a RAID with Windows 7: I'm not familiar with software: my RAIDs have been independent hardware configs...which admittedly, your then at the whim of the hardware controller setup. I think with workstation tasks of many current configs/ software, Windows 10 is a better workstation OS (ESPECIALLY if working with 4K+ resolutions or DD+, Dolby Atmos sound).

I had no trouble at all fixing tiles. Right now my Win 10 install is on the surface very similar to my 7 install,.
I just finished breaking it's desire to store everything in subfolders on the C: drive, and have it all right where it should be on the D: Data drive, in the old My Documents, My Music, My Pictures etc (of course NONE of those pictures are the ones I take with my cameras, those are on a huge separate RAID F: Fotos.

The only thing I let go on C: now is apps, I stopped moving "Program Files" to D: with Windows XP64.

The nexy possible issue is permissions. All of the above folders on the D: Data drive were refusing to aloow my Win 10 istall read them, write to them, etc. I had to "take ownership" of all of them. My guess is that will mean they are no longer going to be accesible by Win 7,. which is all rather annoying. That's a later battle.

Every time I have done this before, it has been temporary, as I do, like anyone else eventually evolve to the modern OS,. or more to the point, break it to my own will and needs. But the point is in the mean time NOT to be stuck, and now I can adopt to Win 10 at my leisure.

[EDIT: I misread your post and thought you had the same issue as me. I'll leave this in case anyone else has the issue I had]

I battled with a somewhat similar issue when I built a new computer with Windows 10 and after installing I moved one of my data drives to my old win 7 computer and I couldn't edit any of the files. I thought it was a permission issue as well, but it turns out Windows 10 has a "quirk" where if "fast startup" is enabled (and it is by default), it will lock all files on all drives when the system is shut down, which will prevent you from editing files on any drive if you either move it to a new machine or dual boot on the same machine. The solution is to turn off fast startup and then reboot and after that you should be good to go.

Here (external link) is the setting you want to change.

A good explanation of Fast Startup can be found at https://www.howtogeek.com …ws-10s-fast-startup-mode/ (external link).

It should be noted that with many of the recent Windows 10 updates, people have found Fast Startup re-enabled. The methods discussed at https://windowsreport.com/cant-disable-fast-startup/ (external link) will (more or less) permanently disable Fast Startup.

As an aside, there is very little reason to have it or hibernation enabled if you run the OS from a SSD.

I was able to solve the permissions issue with a handy "Take ownership" command.
Interestingly, if I boot up Windows 7 again (which I have had to do for various things) when I go back to 10, I have to redo the permissions again, even though I took no such action on the 7 side of things.

No big deal, just curious. As time goes, this will happened less and less often anyways. Goal has always been to get everything set up on 10 so I don't have to go back.

Another annoyance, on the same D: DATA drive , I had some folders and files encrypted. I was diligent in prepping for this swap, and made the appropriate password protected back up key, and put that on a thumb drive. Well low and behold, using that does not give me access to those files and folders in windows 10??

My next step is, (and again thank logic that I made the dual boot option) reboot back to 7 and remove the encryption from there. I can't for the life of me understand what I am doing wrong with the key, password etc. on the Win 10 end of things. I will admit that to using windows encryption I am a novice, but from everything I've read I should be able to open these files on any 7 or up version of windows with the key I made.
