The nexy possible issue is permissions. All of the above folders on the D: Data drive were refusing to aloow my Win 10 istall read them, write to them, etc. I had to "take ownership" of all of them. My guess is that will mean they are no longer going to be accesible by Win 7,. which is all rather annoying. That's a later battle.

I've used a nifty little Explorer extension for years, since XP.
It's a seriously-fast alternative to manually changing permissions, particularly
across different OS versions. Try out the free Unlocker (external link) program.

May not be Win 10 compatible...from the link you provided

For 32-bit and 64-bit Windows systems.

It's working without issue on my Win10 x64 system for almost a year now.

I was able to solve the permissions issue with a handy "Take ownership" command.
Interestingly, if I boot up Windows 7 again (which I have had to do for various things) when I go back to 10, I have to redo the permissions again, even though I took no such action on the 7 side of things.

No big deal, just curious. As time goes, this will happened less and less often anyways. Goal has always been to get everything set up on 10 so I don't have to go back.

Another annoyance, on the same D: DATA drive , I had some folders and files encrypted. I was diligent in prepping for this swap, and made the appropriate password protected back up key, and put that on a thumb drive. Well low and behold, using that does not give me access to those files and folders in windows 10??

My next step is, (and again thank logic that I made the dual boot option) reboot back to 7 and remove the encryption from there. I can't for the life of me understand what I am doing wrong with the key, password etc. on the Win 10 end of things. I will admit that to using windows encryption I am a novice, but from everything I've read I should be able to open these files on any 7 or up version of windows with the key I made.

I'm wondering if you have one or two EFI partitions for your different versions of Windows? EFI partitions do have access to Bitlocker encryption and allow full ownership of folders and files. Not sure if there's a conflict of each Windows install trying to use the same EFI (could be ownership gets reverted when Windows 7 accesses an EFI).

Windows 10 Home or Pro and did you use Bitlocker originally?

I'm not sure what bitlocker is, so I assume no.

It's Windows 7 pro, and whatever that gave me with a new Win 10 install. How would I find out and upgrade to pro? I used the Windows 7 pro license code which I understood meant an equivalent version of 10?
I'll check when I get home to confirm that I have 10 Pro.. -?

I used the Windows 7 pro built in tool,
ie: right click file or folder,
select properties,
click "advanced"
put check mark next to "encrypt contents to secure data"

How I understood Windows 10 activation with an older license key to work,
(it certainly got me up and running!)

"That old Windows product key can only activate against an equivalent Windows 10 product edition. For example, a product key for Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, and Home Premium can be used to activate Windows 10. And Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate product keys can activate Windows 10 Pro. It has to be a retail key, not a key that came with a computer. (And you could always call Microsoft support, explain the situation, and try for a phone activation.)

And here’s a fun future use for this feature. If you purchase a Windows 10 S-based and do not upgrade to Windows 10 Pro before the free upgrade offer ends next year, you can use a valid Windows 7, 8, 8.1 to do so. Yes. I’ve tried that too.

Anyway, you can activate Windows 10 at any time by navigating to Settings > Update & security > Activation. If it’s not activated, or if you simply want to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 10 Pro, you can do so from there."

I went through this BS several times. I ended up buying a couple copies of Win 10 for my kids machine.

I was able to actually get the online support guys. They walked me through the process of creating a USB thumb drive install for Win 10 and showed me how to recover the KEY that was tied to that machine. It worked out well.

No doubt, if you buy the Windows Virus, but it on DVD. Physical Copy is best. Even if your machine does not have a DVD drive it's cheaper to buy one for 20 bucks and plug it in than to buy windows 10, again.

You don't even need to pay for Windows 10. You can just download it from Microsoft and install it. It is fully functional but it has the "Activate Windows 10" text in the lower right corner. I even have a Windows 7 pro activation code but never bothered to activate it.

BitLocker is an encryption method but it would only run, as best I recall, under Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise. So, if you were running Windows 7 Pro you didn’t have BitLocker.

Upgrading from Windows 7 Pro yields Windows 10 Pro. Basically “Pro” gets you “Pro” and “Home” gets you “Home”.

Bitlocker isn’t available for 7 pro, but it is for 10 pro. For 7 pro, Windows has another encryption called Encrypting File System (EFS). Bitlocker encrypts entire volumes, while EFS can encrypt individual folders. Note that the EFS key is only available to the Windows user who encrypted it. So, I would think the reason why it’s not working with another copy of Windows is that you’re a different user. I think the likely culprit for why file permissions revert after starting Windows 7 is it accessing the system partition.

I think the OP has a work around, in that he desired to set up at least initially a dual boot scenario. But the OP might want to read https://answers.microsoft.com …38-4032-a99c-aecae2c685e4 (external link) and if he hasn’t see if he can create the certificate mentioned (bottom response) to access folders, etc. from within Win 10.

Hopefully Jake will be able to get encryption working with 10 by following steps in forum for finding and using the original certification. With the file permissions, my thought was trying to explain:

"Interestingly, if I boot up Windows 7 again (which I have had to do for various things) when I go back to 10, I have to redo the permissions again, even though I took no such action on the 7 side of things."

So if you're fine with the annoyance of "Take ownership" after you switch from Windows 7 to 10, then all is fine.

Yeah, this is why i am a bit baffled, I do have the PFX file, and have the password for it. but still no joy.

Like I said, I guess I'd have to tackle this from the Win 7 side of things, so hear I am posting from my Win7 install having just turned off the encryption. I guess I'll hold off re-encrypting until after I am sure I won't need Win 7 again,. and of course do it from Windows 10!
