Two Versions Of Photoshop Installed On Same Desktop After Update

Hello
I have Photoshop CC installed on my desktop.
I've done an update recently after not having done one for a while.
After doing the update, I now have both 2018 and 2020 versions installed on the desktop.
Can anyone explain why that might be?

I let the update process do what it was going to do.
I did nothing to change the automatic update process.
I thought newer version updates are supposed to overwrite the prior versions?

When I started the update from the Adobe Creative Cloud Apps screen, the new Photoshop logo was showing as the process started.
Below that, the older Photoshop CC logo appeared with an "Update" tab beside it.
After the update was done, the older Photoshop CC logo disappeared and it no longer shows in the Apps list.
Only the new Photoshop logo shows.

The two installed versions seem to be working independently from each other.
As an example, if I open the 2018 version and use a certain tool, say the crop tool, and then close that version, I then open up the 2020 version and the tool last used in that version, say the brush tool, is still active.

Below are the two versions currently installed.

Unpinning simply makes the icon not visible...the software for that version still takes up disk space.

You can have multiple versions of PS on your machine simultaneously-they can even be running simultaneously.

You can use the Adobe Desktop application to install and uninstall.

When I upgraded it asked if I wanted to delete the old version.
You can either keep it or get rid, depends if you need the disc space.

If you launch the Creative Cloud Desktop App and click the ... in the Photoshop Panel it should show you what you have installed.

I used this to uninstall older versions and just kept the latest as in my case, that is exactly what I wanted.

Cheers

Dennis

After checking out the Adobe Desktop Application, I see this.
I assuming that I have 3 different versions of Photoshop and Bridge, and 2 versions of Lightroom installed?
If that is the case, I was never asked if I wanted to delete these particular older versions of each Application when they were being updated.

I've had this Adobe Creative Cloud Photoshop/Lightroom program for 5-6 years and I do seem to remember getting some sort of notification in the past that older versions would be removed as they were being updated.
I find it strange that hasn't happened with the latest updates I've done

I haven't noticed any major issues with any of these Apps other than being a bit slower to start up than what they use to.
Maybe having all these versions might be the cause of that.

Are Photoshop and Photoshop CC now one in the same?
If so, why do I still have the option to update Photoshop CC?

I realize that this probably isn't the right sub forum to be asking these questions but If someone can answer the last 2 questions, that would be appreciated and that will be the last of my inquires on this topic.

Hello Dennis
Your CC Desktop App window shows differently than what mine does but I do have a way to delete older versions of the 3 Apps that I have.
Thanks

Eh? What? Oh for ..... $#@&!

Having read the above - that it is possible to have more than one version of PS installed - I wondered if that might be why PS and ACR seem to run so slowly on my iMac.

So I followed the advice, going into Adobe CC to check how many version are installed. Upon entering my ID and password, it launched an update process without asking. This took a while, as most updates do with Macs.

I was then able to get into the dahboard thingy and check how many version I have.

Turned out I have none. Wut? I've been using the program for more than a year, so what's going on? Anyway, I had the option to install the lastest version, so that's what I did. It's busy downloading now.

What does this all mean? Have I been using PS and ACR via the cloud or something? Was a 'local copy' not installed for all that time? If not, could that be why it runs so slow?

I'm now eager to see what happens when the installation is complete. Fingers crossed it will be faster.

I used to have the "old" Creative Cloud application like the screen shot you posted, but somewhere along the line, it looks like Adobe updated me to the new Creative Cloud Desktop which I think I have been running for a few months now.

Provided there are no major warnings regarding functionality or loss of legacy components, I generally accept all the Adobe defaults during updates so it might have happened after one such update.

I should have mentioned that I am on a Win 10 Pro PC. Maybe try going to the Adobe website and log into your account and see if there is an option to download/update to the latest Creative Cloud Desktop.

Life seemed to be much simpler when I used to purchase a Licence on a CDROM/DVD and install it locally, before the subscription model...

Good luck!

Cheers

Dennis

EDIT: In your screen captures, I suspect the Update applies to the Version 20.0.8 Instance that you have installed - there must be some updates to that installation that have yet to be downloaded. It looks like your 21.0.2 Instance installation is up to date.
Another guess - the little black triangle against the latest Instances of PS, Bridge and LR probably in your screen capture means that these are the current releases.

There may not have been a flashing sign, but you were asked. It is one of the options on the update dialogue screen.

I believe the reason Adobe changed the process was that people complained when a broken update caused them to have to scramble about rolling back the update to the previous version. Now Adobe leave the old version so you can use it if there are problems and then delete it when you are happy that the new version works OK. Or you can just tick the box for the Delete old version option during the update.

Lightroom Classic (v 9.1) and Lightroom CC (2015) (v 6.0) are entirely different applications. Classic is "regular" LR - photo files stored locally - and CC is "Cloudy" - files uploaded to the Adobe cloud.

Maybe the update process is a bit different on your end.
I didn't have those delete options available to me.

A notification screen did come up when I clicked the update tab saying something to the effect that settings and and such from the previous version would be carried over to the newer version when it was installed.
At that point, I could either continue with the update or not.
That notification window closed after continuing with the update.
I didn't see options for anything else from that point on.

What you said about older versions now being kept by default, does make sense.
I wasn't aware that was the case.
