At one time, you could actually set a preference to retain the older version and depending on the setting, you might not be prompted. Check

How to retain previous versions of your app

When you install a new version of a Creative Cloud app, its previous version is removed by default. However, you can set a preference to retain the previous version.

1. Click the gear icon in the upper-right corner to access Preferences.

2. Click the Apps tab in the sidebar and enable the auto-update option.

3. Scroll down to the app's name.

4. Click Advanced Options and disable the Remove previous versions option from the pop-up menu.

Not sure if your post is directed to me or not but, I didn't want to retain previous versions of Apps.
I was wondering why previous versions were still installed after updating to a current version.
I think that might've been answered in an earlier post by another member on this thread.

Thought I would give your instructions a go anyway to see if there was a setting checked off by default that would keep previous versions installed after doing an update.
Following your instructions, I don't see any option for me to have a preference checked off/on to retain previous versions.

I think I use to have the gear icon that you mention but now what I have are 3 dots to the right of where my profile picture would be and, that's how I access Preferences.
See post #7 with the screen shot.

I did step 2 but there are no Apps listed to scroll down to in that same screen.
What is showing under the Apps heading in that same screen are, Apps language, Install location, Notifications, Setting to show older Apps(which isn't checked) and Auto Update.
There is no Advanced Option.
Even if the Auto Update option is checked off, there still isn't an Advanced Option or any kind of choice to disable/enable Remove previous versions in the Photoshop App.

I only have the basic Photography/Lightroom App so maybe my choice availability is different.

A notification screen did come up when I clicked the update tab saying something to the effect that settings and and such from the previous version would be carried over to the newer version when it was installed.
At that point, I could either continue with the update or not.
That notification window closed after continuing with the update.
I didn't see options for anything else from that point on.

Yes the update screen asks if you want to import your previous settings and preferences (ticked by default). It also asks if you want to delete the old version (not ticked by default).

When I (re)installed PS CC recently, those two boxes were only made selectable if I also ticked a box allowing automatic updates. If I didn't tick the 'auto updates' box, the other two were greyed-out.

I don't want my software updating all by itself, when it chooses to, so once I'd finished the download, I went into 'Preferences' and deselected auto updates.

OK, gotcha now.
I wasn't accessing the right part to get what you have shown and what Dennis had shown in post#6

I have to go to "Adobe Account" under my profile picture on the Adobe Creative Cloud start up/splash screen (post#7) or whatever it might be called.

I misunderstood what had been said in previous posts.

Thanks

You say "(re)installed". By that do you mean it had been uninstalled and that you were now doing a clean (re)install? If so, and auto update is de-selected, then the option to delete an earlier version wouldn't apply (and so would be greyed out) for two reasons....
1. There is currently no earlier version on your system to remove, and
2. The system won't automatically update to a new version so it does not need you to select your preference for delete/keep the old version - that option will be presented to you each time you choose to manually update (as per the screen shot above).

It was rather weird. I already had PS CC installed and had been using it for a year or so then, when I read this thread, I thought I would check to make sure only one version was installed. When I checked as per the instruction in here, Adobe said PS wasn't installed at all ... Eh?

Anyway, I went along with it and 'installed it' again, though Adobe CC still seems to think it was never there. I only have one copy installed now, called 'Adobe Photoshop 2020' whereas I think it used to be labelled simply 'Photoshop'.

Oh and, instead of making PS run faster, as I hoped, it now seems even slower than before

Are there still people who use Photoshop on the PC? Being a photographer with experience, I switched to editing photos on my phone a long time ago. It's also much more convenient. After all, now, in mobile photo editing applications (external link), you can do with a photo the same as in professional photoshop. They start with the standard retouching, ending with double exposure, adjusting the color scheme, and adding special effects. Mainly, it is going to be faster. And people usually go to social networks from their phone, so they are used to the format of processing in a mobile phone.

Well, then you aren't "that" experienced, if you're editing photo's on your phone. Yes, most serious folks use PC's with calibrated monitors and RAW processing software with lots of storage.

I gotta say you dredged up an old thread on your very first post. Nicely done.
