I have a copy of Lightroom 5 that was on a desk top that crashed, and I never really got started with it. Can I reload this to a new laptop and start from scratch or is it too outdated to use ?

As of right now, it looks like the most up to date version of Lightroom 5 is 5.7.1. The software should still work but you may run into issues with support for the latest camera bodies and lenses.

Mine has been working fine for me and I'll keep using it as long as I can.
Not a fan of subscription services myself, and I tend to keep post-processing to a minimum anyway.
I do like the organizing features of the product and, so far, I can live without the upgrades to the program.
Best of luck to you.
Cheers.

And if you have a legit copy of LR5, you can most likely go on the web to adobe to download the LR5.7 update file, so you at least can support somewhat newer bodies.

Here is a list of which Lightroom version supports your cameras. Camera Raw Supported Cameras. (external link)

If your cameras are too new to be supported by Lightroom 5.7, you can also get the Adobe DNG (external link) converter for free. It works good, just adds an extra step to downloading images.

In the past year Adobe has started making legacy versions of LR more difficult to obtain. You will have to contact them by phone or chat and provide a serial number. They will then provide a URL to download 5.7.1.

One thing I dislike about Adobe is they tend to try and convince you to upgrade to subscription. Adobe will give it to you but it you have any issues ask here in the LR 1-6 forum. They have access to this stuff and can help you out.
