I am new to the forum and to my DSLR cameras. I bought a T6i camera and it came with the two kit lenses. On both of the lenses, the focus ring spins freely and does not turn on its own when the lens is focusing. Both lens auto focus with the push of the button, but the ring does not spin. Is this normal?

Yes, some of the lenses are "focus by wire", meaning that your focus ring will only focus the lens lens when it has power, otherwise the focus ring just spins freely doing nothing. It is just an electronic control telling the lens to adjust focus for you in conjunction with how much you turn the ring and which way.

This is much like some vehicles that are steer by wire, in fact, which I still don't like. I like the direct feel of the road through my steering, the highlander we have is not fun to drive in this regard.

It would also help to know which lenses they are. I'm guessing one is the 18-55 STM and the other a 75-300mm or maybe the 55-250mm. In either case the focus should not move but if you look at the distance window on the lens, you should see it jump.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Both lenses in the kit are STM, so they are focus by wire.

- EF-S 55-250mm 1:4 - 5.6 IS
- EF-S 18-55mm 1:3.5 - 5.6 IS

Yes this is correct. The two lenses that come with it. Like I said, I just want to make sure there wasn't damage to the camera. The focus ring does not spin while the camera is auto focusing even though the image focuses in the viewfinder. I thought I saw a warning somewhere that you shouldn't grab the ring when it is spinning because it can damage the gear that spins it. Was just afraid I somehow mistakenly did that.

Nope, on the STM lenses, that focus ring is just an electronic ring, and not tied to anything mechanical. Comes with some pros/cons though...
