So what happens to all of us with EOS gear when Canon announces no more SLRs then? It loses most it's value overnight?

C&C on any post ALWAYS welcome.

Certainly not overnight as there are about a billion eos cameras ( actually 100 million) out there and they won't disappear. There will be some reduction in value and it will continue gradually.

Seems to already be well underway, at least in my area. Just a quick peek around FB Marketpace and I found 2 Rebels with lenses for under $200, I 6D with 24-105 for $500, 7DII with 50mm f/1.4 for $700 and a boat load of others.

Meanwhile I actually made a profit on selling my R, just about around $200... :D

I don't think that they will ever go away. After all, box cameras are still with us today, but I can easily see where few, if any, manufacturer are putting any R&D resources towards dSLR technology or even put out a new product. All you have to do is look at the CIPA stats. Mirrorless cameras have been relatively stable since 2016~2017. In that same time dSLR sales have plummeted and it doesn't look as if it has bottomed out yet. For the last several months mirror-less cameras have outsold dSLR. It's still too early in 2020 to predict a trend for the year, but both Jan and Feb were significantly lower in sales than any Jab/Feb since 2005. At what point does a manufacturer just say it not worth the effort.

Canon hasn't released a new EF or M lens in 2 years now and none seem to be in the works. Here (external link) is a pretty decent lens roadmap. Since May 2018 all of their efforts seem to have been diverted to RF lenses. It makes sense as the EF line is rather robust already with few holes and can keep most everyone happy for quite some time. It does surprise me a bit that the M line has stalled as well. Maybe Canon has settled on the RF mount being their future. Sort of seems that way to me.

I am trying to remember what happened when Canon introduced Auto-Focus to the world back in 1988?

There was no backward lens compatibility. I had several Canon film bodies and a slew of lenses ...... still have a bit of it.

But when I bought that EOS-650 ....... it was lens replacement time.

Looking on Best Buy web site the 5D4 is currently at $1999.99

I think a little over a year ago they were at or near $3499.99

Might be good time to pick up another one ..... or not!

Canon USA is offering rebates on 5D4. Everyone should be selling them for $1999 USD. Some are throwing in extras at no extra cost.

Canon Rumors today says no more 5D's. Although he kind of doubled back at the end and says maybe something. The no more 5D's sounds more definitive though.

There will be no direct DSLR successor for the EOS 5D Mark IV.

The source claims that the EOS 5D Mark V development was stopped “some time ago”, and that there are no plans to make an EOS R5 version of the popular professional DSLR line.

I said last Sept/Oct there would be no 7D3 or 5D5, once the rumors came out on the R5/R6 and seeing the R as a stop gap until newer better mirrorless could be created, it was pretty clear there would be no further mid-range DSLR versions coming out.

There would have been no conceivable market for such two bodies with the 90D/M6II, R, and the yet to be announced (at that time) R successors.

With Covid hitting since then, I no longer think there will be any Rebel DSLR either. At the time in 2019, I figured there would be one or two more yet, but the demand has shrunken so much, there is no market for that either now.

We might be looking at an M50 II, an R-series APS-C mirrorless, and maybe, just maybe, some higher end cinema-oriented mirrorless.

I still think that the Canon R5 is a perfect successor to the 5DIV. It's as if the R5 is the 5V..
