I have a Canon 40 which I have mainly used with external flash but wanted to try the build in flash.
However the build in flash func setting now says that I have an external flash
The external flash says that I have a flash with the power turned off.

However I disconnected the external flash, if I reconnect it - I can use it so it could be worse.
Any ideas how to get the pop up flash to work?

Look very carefully at the shoe for the external flash. In most Canon cameras there is a very tiny switch along the rail where the external flash is mounted. It gets depressed when the external flash is mounted thus sending a signal to the camera an external flash is mounted. If you have the switch, "exercise" it with a toothpick to make sure it isn't stuck. The attached picture shows the switch on a Canon DSLR.

Sadly I had a slight crisis and haven't had a chance to try it yet, hopefully this weekend.

Putting a flash in the hot shoe should activate that switch. It looks like it put enough pressure on the switch to free it.

I forgot to say that I did try that once before asking and it did not work then (weird)
