I'm just trying to put up one of those shade sail things and have had to come in out of the sun for my morning coffee. It's only 26ºC out there, but it's in a real sun trap and no wind so it feels quite warm! I've even put my steel toecap flip flops on, just in case

This was an unusual commission a little while back. Lead weighted head on it for a better whack!

It's not a cosh, well it is of sorts I suppose? It's a fisherman's priest and it's for bashing fish on the head, but only when they've been caught

I've been told that it's completely painless, but I suppose that is unless you hit your fingers when holding the fish?

Richard, if I remember correctly the main part is beech and the end toggle is oak and there are several ounces of lead in the hollow fat end. I remember that the fisherman was very pleased with it.

On the subject of fish fingers a moment. A class of children from a London East End school were taken on a trip to one of the fishing ports on the east coast. I think it was Grimsby? The idea of the trip was to show them around the birds Eye factory up there and to show them that fish don't really have fingers. So many of them had never actually seen a fish and as they have eaten fish fingers they thought that the fish really had them.

Over here–way to your west, or your east if you take a longer route–they have a different name. "Fish fingers" is a Briticism that baffled me until I figured it out from a number of contexts. We call those things fish sticks.

Some wood watch stands. Did some variations with walnut, birds eye maple, cherry and red oak.
