Hoping this is the best spot to post this... Cheer is a sport, right?

I was looking to do something a little different with a couple of seniors- so we used a hose and a kiddie pool and got some fun shots. This was one of my favorites!

C&C always welcome!

I like it. Nice movement. The panties showing might not be a bonus for the parents.

I have this discussion with them every time I shoot cheer. They don't care. They are some kind of special shorts/panties/whatever- Lollipops? I think they call them?

Whatever the case... Cheerleaders and moms seem mostly unfazed by this. I share your concerns, but I've learned to adapt.

I agree, nice photo but the panties seem unflattering.

They're not panties they are bloomers and will consistently show just like that during a routine/performance so I don't think it's a big deal to those who care about cheerleading (the girls, the parents, etc). It's part of the sport I guess? Both of my sisters were cheerleaders growing up when I was a football player even back then (almost 25 years ago) it was never a big deal to them.

I don't know if I'd feel the same if (or when... :/) it were my daughters.

FYI, there's a new docu-series type show on Netflix called (appropriately enough) Cheer! that you may enjoy. I've only seen the trailer, so far.

I'm mainly here for the snacks

Thanks for weighing in guys! I see both sides here, but can only vouch that the people who's opinions are most important here- the cheerleader and her parents- are very ok with the pose. It does happen a lot with cheer- I guess you get desensitized.

Bingo!

I forgot to mention that it's wonderful shot! Can you give us a better idea of how you did the water? It's a really cool effect.

Thank you! Happy to share.

There were 2 parts to this for the water... I had an assistant spraying a hose behind her to create kind of a mist. Then I had her standing in a kiddie pool with 6-8 inches of water in it. All she had to do was jump and do the cheer thing, and enough of the water from the pool followed her feet.

Shot it outdoors, hung a black backdrop behind her. 2 lights on either side, behind her facing towards the camera to light the water. Pretty sure I had a beauty dish to the camera right as the main light.

A little timing, a little luck, 30 test shots... easy as pie. :)

These aren't cheer, but they are from the same shoot. The dance shot is very similar, the softball girl was actually a misfire... the main didn't fire fully. The kids had a really good time with all of these.

I'm sure I stole it from somewhere... original ideas are few and far between. I consider it more "paying it forward" than stealing. ;)

.
First of all, that is a really great image! Love it!

There is something about this method that I don't understand.

We can see in the photos that her feet are bare. . And I know from experience that any kiddie pool I've ever used is very slickery (even those with built-in surfaces that are supposed to be non-slip ... which actually aren't non-slip in the least). . And she is jumping up in the air and then landing back down, assumingly with her bare feet coming down from the jump onto that slick plastic kiddie pool material.

How in the world does she not slip and fall and get seriously injured every time she attempts to do this?!

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Great point!

The Cheerleader had shoes on... so things were not so treacherous. The dancer didn't get nearly so high off the ground, and I believe I had a piece of black fabric in the pool by then as well. It was there mostly to keep the light blue pool out of the scene, but it would have also provided some traction.
