I am working on locating several odd historic barns within North Carolina as there are a lot of them, mostly old tobacco barns. Some present a great landscape while others really are quite eh.

The biggest challenge I have had is finding a usable registry or any useful information in regards to such structures. While traveling I will stumble across some, but it would be great if anyone knows of a good way to search the historical registries, etc. Slowly working through the ARGIS map is not a workable solution.

I don't know anything about North Carolina, but each Indiana county has a registry of historical barns accessible through the county assessor's office. To qualify, said barns must be more than 100 years old, some percentage (not sure exactly) of original construction, and still serviceable or in use. Mine was built in 1883, but I put metal siding and a shingle roof on it: DISQUALIFIED!

I had not thought about looking it up at the county level, just at the state level. I will give that a shot.

Small-county Indiana does not have an online data-base. I'd have to go into the Assessor's Office to get a listing. Yes, rural Indiana is still in the Stone-Age.

Primarily Madison County, but seems to be a good resource... https://database.appalachianbarns.org/ (external link)

That is a great site. I should be over that way in a few months and will have to check out some of these.
