Every week we select a new theme, and then go out and shoot that theme. This week the theme is Analog. As always be as imaginative/creative as you like when interpreting the theme, creativity is what we're looking for.

Show us what you've still got! :p

Here are the rules:
1. Shots need to be taken between Tuesday, after the new theme is posted and the following Monday by sunset (Whenever that is for you). Because this activity is supposed to encourage us to get out and shoot, please don't post old shots from your archives. Snapshots and art are equally welcome -- just get out & shoot, and then share!
2. Post your shots at any time during the week.
3. Post a maximum of two shots if you're uploading them to POTN (i.e., attaching them). You can post more than two if you're linking to shots that are not hosted by POTN (i.e. embedding them) but keep within POTN rules. Also keep within POTN rules about size. A copy of the size rules can be found here: IMAGE POSTING RULES
That's it! Have fun! As always be as imaginative/creative as you like when interpreting the theme, creativity is what we're looking for.
An index to previous weeks can be found here: POTN WORLDWIDE PHOTO WEEK INDEX

That's it!
Have fun!

Joayne,

Thanks so much for taking the initiative to set up these weekly themed threads - it's fun to participate and I appreciate your efforts!

I must admit, I am having trouble understanding what "analog" means. . It's a term I've seen used to reference using film for photography, but other than that I have no familiarity with the term.

So, I did what I do whenever I want to know what something means, and this is what I got:

Unfortunately, that made things more confusing to me, rather than clearing things up. . I don't understand that definition at all ...... might as well be reading a foreign language!

So, I'm asking for help.

If anyone can explain what "analog" means, in very simple language, I would appreciate it a bunch! . And when I say, "in very simple language", I basically mean, like, explain it the way you would to a 6 or 7 year old kid. . I'm afraid I just won't get it if it isn't explained that way.

Thanks!

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Tom, we are looking for things Not Digital. More of a definition of Old School, not electronic. Pre Digital would be a better way of expressing this weeks theme.. Sorry for the confusion

Thanks for the clarification, Joayne.

This should be easy for me. . I photograph nature and wildlife, and of course nothing I find in nature is digital or electronic. . So pretty much anything I would normally shoot should be a perfect fir for this theme ..... I just have to get out there and shoot!

It is interesting to have a theme that is based on what things are not, rather than a theme based on what things are!

How do you like your new rig, Kevin? And.. That is one fancy analog receptacle. We see very few on the streets these days in the U.S. I do still like to write and I have actual stationary!

Not quite. Analog is to digital as acoustic guitar is to electric guitar. Before there were electric guitars, acoustic ones were just called guitars. What makes something the analog version is the existence of a digital version. I'm not joayne, of course, but I understand our task as a search for analog things that have a digital equivalent. I wouldn't count wildlife as analog, because a digital version hasn't replaced it.

We had this topic before, didn't we? I've seen that green phone.

Thank you Joayne. We still have some of these beauties in the older heritage buildings that have been
saved from the wrecking ball over the years. The building this is in was the tallest commercial building
in The British Empire when it was completed in 1910. 13 stories-175 feet.

I am enjoying the new camera a lot. Just picked it up last Fri. It is a t7i. I am looking forward to getting out more soon.

Yes, about 4 years ago, and Yup.. :-P
But, it is a new image, taken today. Just to be clear.

Feel free to post the digital version along with the analog, just for comparison
or not

I was going to take a shot of an old green princess phone until I realized that the push buttons were digital.

On a technical level, I disagree - analogue is a pure wave whereas digital is taking a pure wave (either sound wave or electrical is same principle) , and taking a number of samples of the levels in the wave, and transporting only the references to the sampling points. I'll see if I can find a good graphic to illustrate what I mean. Here you go: Analogue Vs. Digital graphic Here (external link)

In the world of electric guitar, the pickup on the guitar is passing on the pure wave generated by the strings so can still be classed as analogue. The output is still analogue.

To me, a more fitting analogue Vs. digital comparison would be the LP record (or cassette tape or even Edison tube) being a passing on of the pure waveform, whereas a CD is just passing on samples of the original recorded waves.

[goes off in search of a suitable analogue subject to photograph this week]

joseph, you seem to be disagreeing with something not in my post. I didn't say that an acoustic guitar is analog and an electric guitar is digital. I only used guitars as a parallel to illustrate how the word "analog" is used. It's like "acoustic."

sorry - just thought it better to try and define one Vs. the other. Not to worry - I understand now what you mean, thanks!
