Spent Memorial Day weekend in St Petersburg FL. I was brave and took my Mark III and Sigma 150-600 Tele on my first morning walk and was surprised with my captures using it as a 'walk-around' lens . So I followed up the next day with my Canon 70-200.

I fully agree about the 200-400. It sits on my 1Dxmk 3 all day at a typical motorsports meeting and seems to be a marriage made in heaven. It is so responsive and very sharp. With covid restrictions I don't even need a short zoom because I'm staying away from the pits and the grid. I've fairly recently moved from case 3 to case 4 and that seems to have brought some improvements with it. The zoom is also good with the R5 and gives some superb images although it doesn't quite have the ultra reliable hit rate of the 1Dxmk 3. However I did take the R5 out with the 70-200mm f2.8L mk 2 recently and it was really snappy, producing consistently good results. I wondered therefore if the R5 lacks a little power to drive heavy glass compared with the 1Dx3?

I also wonder if anyone is in a position to compare or has compared the 200-400 with the RF 100-500 ?

Have been on holiday in Devon for the las week - got back today.

Had some disappointing results photographing some small birds. Probably just a case of too small a target and other stuff around which the camera focused on. But did get a couple that are ok.

What focus setting were you using Mark? In situations like that with lots of twigs, flowers, leaves and so on in the vicinity of a small subject, I tend to go with single point focussing and forget any idea of tracking no matter how much intelligence the camera thinks it has. On a positive - some sharp birdies there although I would not have put them so central in the frame. Good to see the use of a x2 extender on what is now and even more versatile 300mm f/2.8.

Heat haze and strong harsh sunlight is a big issue at times for AF particularly around mid-day. You can see evidence of it in the background of your first image. The camera can really struggle to lock on, even with using single point.
I've had the same issue for years with Canon bodies at motorcycle road races, even in relatively low temperatures. I managed to overcome it by shooting down on the subject from a small step ladder, thus avoiding the worst of the light turbulence. Not always possible to do that if you're just out for a stroll in the countryside and no one really wants to carry any more heavy gear than they need.

I was using all the points most of the time - but did try a few different cases including auto.

But hindsight says I should have used single point more!

Bit central - yep guilty as charged! They were only snaps so haven't cropped at all just a quick edit really.

The 2x on the 300 is fantastic - not as good as the 600mm f4 I borrowed the other week - but not £8k worse!

Red Dog, yes this is the first time I've struggled so much - but also the first time I've tried it in these conditions with this camera - and the subject was very small combined with as you say haze and stuff around generally.

Couple more - the wren was at a RSPB reserve and the other on the coast. - slightly better composition!

This lens is astonishing. Autofocus. Monopod.

Wee 8hr round trip yesterday to the Saltee Islands off the southern tip of Ireland, to photograph the puffins, razorbills and gannets. I was particularly after birds in flight to test the AF capabilities to the limit. What I and others found was that the auto AF tracking working well when shooting against the sky, but struggled to acquire and hold focus when the subject bird was at or below the level of the cliff especially with the sea in the background. We concluded that it was the sun reflecting off the caps of the waved was interfering with the AF system and preventing it from picking up the birds.
However, all in all, we were pleased with the quality of the images.

Shooting Puffins with a Canon (ho ho) has been a favourite pastime of mine for a few years but never been to Saltee. Off to Fair Isle in a couple of weeks but the weight of my usual and preferred Canon gear needs a lot of thought. (Been before but as part of an organised photography group who had a special “book a place on the 7 seater aeroplane for the camera gear” arrangement).

Great pictures.
