I'm surprised at the amount you have in focus in these given they are shot at f1.2 - but sweet shots regardless.

Both these posts are very nicely photographed.

Love those oldies (cars) and how you've presented them Julian.
Just beautiful!

Daniel the grebes are so nicely presented.
Beautiful details, not to mention the subjects.
Top job :-)

The DoF isn't as thin as one would think at the distances presented. Some cropping was done for composition purposes so I guess in a way, the object/subject are closer than they appear.

Indeed. I love the old cars. There's character and style... and most of all, IMO, class. The new stuff they have out, sure... there's technology and stuff... but seems soulless. :D

Pretty dull in the garden this morning while trying to photograph these sparrows. Such brilliant low light performance from the 1DX MkIII.

A little youth soccer from over the weekend. Its hard to get shots isolated when they all hoard around the ball

Two not so good shots in sequence, from same camera location with two completely different exposures. Camera Problem, Setting Problem or Operator Error? I seem to only have this happen when I'm on this side of the court with the crazy electronic banner and gym net background. Evaluative Meetering, Min Shutter at 2000K, F 2.8, and Auto ISO. One gets taken at 16,000 ISO and the other at 3200? Besides my horrible technique, what's going on?? I have large zone auto focus with the top 1/3 of the viewfinder selected. White Balance is custom using a white lens filter. I never have this problem from the other side of the gym using these settings.

I've no doubt the electronic banner, combined with the evaluative metering mode, is having an effect on the exposure in the second image as I've seen the same thing happen with electronic scoreboards in the background of some of my soccer photos. The fact that its also reflecting off the floor probably exaggerates the exposure reading the camera is making and it has reduced the ISO below what would normally be correct to expose the players correctly. It looks about 1/3 underexposed.

Top pic is slightly overexposed, again probably due in some part to the metering mode/dark background impacting pushing the ISO higher than it should be, (plus the slightly higher shutter speed used between pic 1 and 2). The pic is also slightly oof which might have impacted on the cameras settings not being fully set when the photo was taken.

I'd try a different metering mode to try and reduce the influence of the background on the cameras exposure. I might also try and different shooting mode. Perhaps AV, setting a fixed ISO, and let the shutter speed automatically fluctuate between a minimum of 1/1000 and perhaps 1/2500 if the lighting conditions allow.

I did a photoshoot last Saturday and am impressed by the details in the images - I didn't bother to sharpen them at all - the only sharpening is what is applied when uploaded to here.

So, I borrowed a Sigma 120-300 Sport from a friend for the weekend to give it a go on some youth soccer, being the fields are small and tight. Man, what an impressive and disappointing lens all the same. IQ is top tier and for the most part the AF is pretty good, but it just couldn't deliver when things got moving. I had high high hopes for it, but after testing it in the yard all day Friday with my kids running around. I decided to leave it at home and took the 200-400 instead.

It delivers really good IQ. "when it hits" :-(

The 200-400 is just spectacular though... 800 shots in Sundays tournament. Only 1 was out of focus.

I have the same lens and have used it extensively at national and international football (soccer) matches and have found it to be very reliable.

Just wondering did you customise the AF settings on the lens beforehand? I've mine set to acquire focus quickly and it works very well. Not just as fast as the Canon, but theres little difference in it.

The Blue Angels do a Homecoming Air Show for their home town to end the season. Usually its a big to do on the Naval Air Station with a nice winter sun and show center north of the crowd. With the COVID this year they held it at Pensacola Beach instead. Great location, lousy sun aliignment with the show center EastWest along the coast and crowd to the North. Arghhhhhh what were they thinking?? On the 2nd shot look how all the pilots are focused on their alignment reference. Only the lead pilot is looking forward.

Just a few more shots. I was glad to have a portrait orientation for these two.
