I had a reply by Canon Europe regards the smaller white box in live view on the older mkI lenses

Quote:
Hi Alan, with older lenses or when you use an Extender for example, you will find the AF area in Live View mode will switch to approx. 80% (horizontal) x approx. 80% (vertical) of the image display area, which looks like what's happening here. With newer lenses, you will find that the area increases to approx. 90% (horizontal) x 100% (vertical) of the image display area. We're glad to hear you're enjoying the camera so far though and if you have any questions, do let us know. Thanks.

What AF mode have you been using Rob? Look pin sharp. Excellent work.

Here are a couple of images from my outing Saturday. Weather is really crap here in the UK at the moment. Both large crops. Both Shovelers, Male and Female.

Did anyone here choose to or have to MFA your lens to get these results?

Everything I have tested so far there has been no need; all my Canon lenses were perfect on the 1DXIII.

thats the mirrorless technology in the camera

I think MFA will be a thing of the past on future bodies

Right, someone get out and shoot a soccer match and report back on the speed of acquisition, AF retention, tracking accuracy etc. No more birds please. :-P

Agree - I need to see some fast sports! (And no complaining about the weather - that's why we need these cameras :-P)

For once , I didn’t do or have to do any micro adjustments either. With bare lenses or extenders. My 7dii. I had to do +7 on my 500 f/4 right away. But even that. That cameras focus was so hit and miss with any lens I had on it. This camera is much better for sure.

I got my 1dx boxed up ߘ. Will send back to B&H today and we will see. Hopefully doesn¢t take a month, but got no idea.
Even tho I pre ordered first and got camera early, sounds like I may go to end of line for a replacement...

I called canon. He said he would return it too. Said sounds like maybe I got an electrical issue. Based on my error code / log and what was happening. He said firmware probably wouldn’t cause all the issues I saw.

Based on what I got during a dark theatre performance, (granted not the same, but closer that birds!) it is really going to be rock solid!

So far (and I haven't tested all my lenses yet), my 50L needs +7 adjustment (but it's always needed between +5 to +10 on my previous Canons. That said, and I'm sure you already knew, MFA is only relevant to OVF focusing. DPAF thru Live View disregards all that. So if one is able to shoot on a tripod, one might as well shoot using Live View. :D
