I believe that what you see is a rivet in the Eyepiece Shutter assembly.
What its purpose is I do not know but is looks like the secured (upset) end of a post or rivet.

The purpose of the shutter itself is:

Page 258 in. EOS 1 DX Mk II manual:

When you take a picture without looking through the viewfinder, such as when you use the self-timer, bulb exposure, or a remote switch, stray light entering the viewfinder can cause the picture to look dark (underexposed). To prevent this, slide the eyepiece shutter lever as shown by the arrow to cover the viewfinder eyepiece.
You do not need to cover the viewfinder eyepiece during Live View shooting or movie shooting.

Yeah we will see. Hopefully goes smoothly to get a new one. :-). Just sucks since Owl season is just about over for Short-Eared, as well as Rough-Legged Hawks and such.
I was able to get some 5.5K Raw/4k videos and nice shots, so is something at least. But they might be gone before I get the camera back.

On a side note: My friend and I also saw the same thing on our bodies. I didn't realize at first you can flip up the little OVF cover for long exposures...
But on both of our flip/covers, UNDER the glass/eye piece, we can see a little dot of glue or oil or something, stuck to the flap.
I would not use that flap, so it's fine I'm sure, but at first I was like..... wtf is that??

Caught my camera having a sneaky sensor clean today, looked down and it was showing the sensor clean message. Odd but no big deal I'm sure.
Anyway, discovered a slightly annoying thing with the smart controller, not that I chimp much ;) but when taking a shot if you look to the rear screen for a preview image and happen to have your finger in motion near or on the smart controller it cuts the preview image short or just does not display it, I find that unless you remove your finger away fully this can become annoying, this is with my style of back button focus, I tend to hover my finger on or over the BBF/smart controller so it's kind of to be expected as the camera expects your still shooting so to speak.

Ever since Canon introduced the sensor cleaning feature, the camera tends to do this every time you turn on the camera. (Probably sneaks it in sometimes when the camera falls into sleep mode or wakes from sleep mode too.)

It's there in the 1DX2, same as the 1DX3.

So it seems like the once the focus point has locked on it sticks to the subject like glue. Is this still the case when a zoom is used and the focal length is changed during tracking?

Yes. Changing the focal length of a zoom lens while AF is locked and tracking in Servo mode does not cause disrupt AF lock/tracking on subject.

hmmmm.... OR that's the crash I had, and you missed it/happened to see the image cleaning part of the reboot....
hopefully not though!.. But if you were using the camera, weather it went to sleep or not... it shouldn't clean, unless rebooted I think.....?

This combo is awsome.
I realise that the lens combo is EF400mm f/2.8L IS III USM +2x III......do you think this will work with the version 2 lens (EF400mm f/2.8L IS II USM +2x III)?

I have an opportunity to get a used EF400mm f/2.8L IS II lens.

Thank you for your advice.

It should, that also is a great lens just a little heavier. I would give it a go.

What AF mode have you been using Rob? Look pin sharp. Excellent work.

I have been mainly using the face tracking in Live view. Single point also. I used the OVF only for flight today and wowza. I will be posting some in a bit. I used the large Automatic selection AF today and it was like cheating

Yeah, when it crashed on me a few times, it happened pretty fast. Like within 2-3 seconds it crashed and rebooted.
If i wasn't paying attention/ddin't happen to be bursting at that time, I prob. would have missed it even.

This is the first time in my 16 years of shooting DSLRs that I'm using the entire AF selection (instead of point/expanded/zone). This new AF really does feel like I'm cheating... and I'm okay with that.

Absolutely likewise! This is a whole new ball game for camera AF tracking.
never use live view much even though I've had a camera capable of it since my first 1D Mark III in feb 2007. I want to use LV so much I paid a LOT for that little Hoodman rig!

Lets hope not.
Also I hope I'm not sending it in, and it really IS a firmware issue and then I am losing 2-3+ weeks of best time of year to be using it...

If it was almost any other time of year, I'd be like whatever, I can deal with it. But right now when my fav. birds/wildlife are here, it hurts alot more.

P.S my immediate feedback for the Hoodman kit, is wow what an awfully complex solution for a simple problem, too bad they put all that time and effort into it without providing a gosh darned hinge to make it swing easily out of the way so you can use the OVF or share the LCD screen, but I guess they'd charge us another hundred for that!

Agree, it should only clean on power down, so... you got to wonder hay. I've seen odd sensor cleans before outside of when they should happen, I did check the settings for sensor cleaning and it's set as it should be, at the time I have been shooting with the 35II so it's even a late lens. I will keep an eye on it.

A little video I just recorded about when Sensor Cleaning is triggered.
