Rob, thx for the input on Case 3, also I will change my setting from Focus priority, will move it left for faster Release.

Do you use a Registered Focus Point? I would like to use it so my initial focus point in Auto Select mode would be a bit higher in the frame than the center point--but when I register an alternate point the continuous flashing drives me crazy so I don't use it.... Most of my shooting with my 400 is sports--interestingly the settings that work well for BIF seem to also be the best settings for sports. Auto Select/Face Detect has changed the game, no pun intended.

I do not register my AF point. I like usually starting in the center for BIF when using full auto. I do not know if you use custom modes, C1 C2 C3 if so you could set one of them with the AF point where you want it, every time to go to that custom mode the AF point will start there.

thanks. I moved "First Image Priority" all the way to the left, to Release priority. The next Menu item is "2nd Image Priority." The center position is 0, then there is -1 and -2 for Release priority, and +1 and +2 for Focus priority. Do you recommend 0, -1 or -2? thx for the help--I think I'm closing in on "my optimum settings." thank heavens!

Thank you! I'll give that a shot.

I was surprised how well my 2x worked on my 500 though. I had my ISO too low actually/shutter fairly "low" for an osprey flying.
It was a very busy background with boats/cars/water/etc, and super dark outside, but it nailed many shots of it flying and landing.

But that was before using new settings. I'll try the middle Zone, which does sound better in my head for sure. Instant Focus probably is better
for BIF/SKY as well, but will check it out.

One thing that also really annoys me, is that you can't use dual back button focus, with 2 different cases/settings in Live View...
I REALLY don't understand why... other than that, they just didn't want to do it. I also noticed on my lens, if i twist the lens ring to go to my
preset focus distance, it doesn't work in Live View either, only in Optical... which is also very strange/makes no sense.

I'm still hoping they release a firmware update again here soon, with more AF Improvements / options and so on. But we will see.
I know the 1DX bodies in the past got a ton of Firmware updates / AF Improvements/etc, right?

In a similar vein I wonder if a firmware update would give the III Animal Eye focus, like the R5/6 is rumored to have...

How did you shoot at f/0.95 with a 14mm f/2.8 lens?

The Rokinon 14mm I have is all manual, focus and F stop. The lens doesn't report it's settings to the camera. Those were all shot at different F Stops. I used the magnify view to fine tune the focus and had ISO set on auto. As i changed the shutter duration I adjusted the F stop to achieve the desired lighting in Live View. This was my first use of this lens on my1DX. It was dark so they weren't recorded (I'm such an amateur :)). Tripod mounted and with a 2 second delay for shutter release.

Glad to report that my Sigma 500mm F4 Sport works beautifully with the Mkiii straight connection, plus with the Canon EF 2x converter attached. Focus is quick and locks on perfectly.
