Finally some action sports to test the new lady out. Conditions were overcast but thankfully no rain, so good to go for some pre-season bike testing. I used the 500mm f4 Sigma Sport attached to the mkiii, plus tested my regular steed (the EF200-400 f4), then a brief test with the 2x converter on the big Sigma.
Used a variety of AF points including the small box of automated points, the large box of automated points and the small fixed groups.

Overall very happy with the perforrmance of both lens combinations with the body. Had more consistent results with the fixed groups of AF points than the automated points, although the small group of automated points did work reasonably well and the tracking was better than the large group.
Unfortunately the 2x converter on the Sigma was very hit and miss. It locked on when the AF button was pressed, but it struggled to hold the bikes and drifted off and on even with the bikes coming straight towards me. Not sure whether a change of AF Case might help address this or not. I wouldn't be comfortable using it in real time if my life depended on getting that big picture.
Good to get out and blow the cobwebs off and looking forward to some more action over the coming weeks.

Thanks Rob. Any suggestions on how I might improve the 2x converter with the Sigma?:-)

Do you find it holds AF ok for fast moving objects with the Canon lens though? Without it I was getting 99% in focus during tracking on the Sigma. With it I'd say 20-30%. Didn't try it with the 200-400 to see if it was any better, although I'd be surprised if there was any improvement as the Sigma is a decent lens.

I'm really impressed by the eye detail here. So many of the shots I have seen the eyes seem extremely soft and have little detail. Did you do any post? The colors are really nice. Great job! I have been looking to see some sport photos. Thank you for sharing.

Nothing more than lifting the shadows, and very light sharpening to the overall image. We'll see how it manages when the football/soccer kicks in shortly. So far so good.

One of the better images with the Canon 2x converter attached to the Sigma 500mm F4 sport. If I could improve the consistency of the tracking I think it would be awesome to use. Unfortunately I found the AF was a little too hit and miss to be relied upon in the field, however when it did hit, the image quality is second to none.

When it works, it works. Great shot. I love the heat shimmer in the BG with perfect focus in the front.

Can't say I've seen a Mistlethrush in the garden before. Silly sod dropped the berry.

Couple of snaps from my morning walk. The gull is a crop - but Ii was quite pleased with it - one of a sequence that the camera held focus on nicely - my panning wasn't always spot on, but still early and rusty!
