I am planning a trip to the LA on Valentine’s Day and I am trying to decided wether to take my 70-200 or my 100-400. I haven’t been to the zoo in 30+ years so I have no idea which would be better. Currently I have a 80d but I may pull the trigger on a FF camera by then so that may also be a decision. The FF will be an EOS R. Not sure yet but leaning that way. So what do you all think? I will also take a 18-35 sigma and my 100mm macro is. Thanks for any suggestions. All my gear is in my signature if you all think something else is better.

My kit : Canon EOS R6 and EOS R, RF 24-105mm f/4 IS L, EF‑S 16-35mm F4 L, EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, EF 70–200mm f/2.8L IS III, EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM, Sigma 35mm Art f/1.4, Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX II, 600exII-RT, 580EX II. Gitzo GT2542 and RRS BH-55, Peak Designs Carbon Fiber Tripod, Think Tank MindShift BackLight 36L and 26L, and Think Tank Retrospective V20 2.0.

80D + 100-400.

You'll need the reach. The max magnification @ 400mm near MFD is also good substitute for a dedicated macro.

Also, if you're going specifically to take pictures, ok, but if you're taking a Valentine's date I'd seriously consider leaving the camera at home and just have a nice day with your partner. Zoo pictures aren't worth sacrificing romance for.

Romance is later lol. Wife is totally on board with the picture taking, plus we are taking niece and nephews and possibly my daughter and granddaughters. Not a romantic trip. Definitely going to have the eos R as I just pulled the trigger on it. I will probably take both bodies. 24-105 for family/ kid shots and the 80d with the 100-400 for the reach on the animals.

70-200 is too short for wildlife/animals.

That depends on the zoo. If you look at the animal pics in my gallery, nearly all of them were shot with a crop camera and a 200mmL prime lens at the Memphis zoo. Even at 200mm I find that is often too long and requires me to work for the shot. I have a 100-400 that I sometimes take to the zoo, but rarely since I often need f/2.8 to make the bars/cages disappear.

Canon 7D, 5D, 35L, 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8, 135L, 200L, 10-22, 17-55, 70-300, 100-400L, 500D, 580EX(2).
Sigma 150 macro, 1.4X, 2X, Quantaray 2X, Kenko closeup tubes, Yongnuo YN685(3), Yongnuo YN-622C-TX. Lots of studio stuff.

When I took a trip to the St Louis zoo, I took the 100-400 since I was unfamiliar with that zoo. I'm glad I had the longer zoom lens there since some of the exhibits were farther away than at the Memphis zoo and I needed the shorter focal length for some of the exhibits.
