He’s a bit of a rarity up here, just a few seen each winter. Fewer even than Snowy Owls.

Great shot, Ian! Now that's a bird I would love to see, but these boreal species rarely venture far enough south.

Gear List

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Definitely a super shot, Ian. Could not have asked for a better pose. Any bif shots?
Gotta ask- what type of pine here? With cone production like that, must’ve a million of them.

Thanks very much Sam. Yes they're rare here too, just the odd one shows up in my province each winter, and some winters none at all.

Many thanks Richard i I was lucky that it cleared off just enough for me to get some blue sky in there too.

Hi Rog! Yes I got a couple flight shots but he was heading away from me when he went back into the woods area. Here's one. The tree is a white spruce.

and one more that I liked ... he was actively hunting but didn't go down to the ground when I was there.

For sure, thanks Dan. In fact as I was sitting there and saw him fly in and land on that tree, I thought it was a crow at first, but then when I got out of the car and pointed the big lens at him, I was very happy to see it was this guy.

Good for you, Ian. A few have been sighted in our neck of the woods and if the sun ever shines again, I'm going to go out and look for one.

Hey Al, good to hear from you! You're actually about the same latitude as me so hopefully you'll find one/some. They accept human presence nicely.
