HTP is very useful for actually having the DR managed for you to help with your shoot, especially if you are not careful with each shot, which is a condition many may find themselves in. Also HTP is the only setting in the camera that actually affects the raw file, so the camera actually will do the work for you and frees you up a bit on shooting to the right. No other setting is baked into the raw like HTP. I have started to use this on the 7D2 and 5D4 with great results.

Also from Chuck Westfall...

Highlight Tone Priority (HTP) is available with all current EOS models excluding the Rebel XS/1000D. HTP has no effect on the actual dynamic range of the image sensor. It's just an alternative method of image processing that preserves more highlight detail than Canon's standard processing, without significantly altering midtones or shadows. The effect of HTP is enhanced by Canon's 14-bit A/D converter, which provides finer tonal gradations than the previous 12-bit system. HTP is a Custom Function with a simple on/off setting, and the available range of ISO speed settings is slightly limited when it is on. Take a look at the following Web page for some sample images that show the capabilities of Highlight Tone Priority:

You have to be in one of the PASM modes to access all of the menus. Program, Aperture or Shutter priorty, or Manual.

I am unsure of the many comments about CAMERA SETTINGS being on/off...your posted photo looks to be close to ideally exposed on my laptop, at first glance. IOW, regardless of the camera settings status, the OP photo has nothing wrong with it! It has to be an issue in the computer with which OP is viewing the image. With the stated Brightness and Contrast settings, it is not immediately obvious is that is issue is in fundamental monitor adjustment.

Now to go retrieve it on my desktop, where I can look at the posted JPG distribution on histogram.

Really need to run the monitors through a calibration step, either using the free versions that aren't great, but get a monitor pretty close, or pay for a color spectrometer device.

If you run windows, try the windows calibration tool, better than nothing IMO.

I just brought up the JPG in Lightroom. As I suspected, the histogram showed a pretty 'normal' kind of exposure. Then, just to see what LR would do, I pushed the Auto button for Exposure, and it RAISED exposure by +0.35 and it lowered Contrast by -1 So nothing was way out of whack with regard to how it was exposed, WITHOUT REGARD to ALO or any other camera setting.

The OP had stated, "a problem with photos looking darker when they are uploaded to my computer specifically the sky when sunny. They look fine on the LCD viewing screen, but once they are uploaded to my computer they look much darker."
They look darker on the OP monitor, yet they seem to display just fine on a number or OUR monitors (multiple POTN replies to this point)...it AIN'T no steenkeeng camera setting at fault!

In the 1948 film The Treasure of the Sierra Madrea Mexican bandit leader named "Gold Hat" tries to convince Fred C. Dobbs (Humphrey Bogart) that he and his company are Federales:

Dobbs: "If you're the police, then where are your badges?"
Gold Hat: "Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. I don't have to show you any stinkin' badges!"

An easy and pretty accurate way of setting up your monitor can be found here:

And then there is the very simple monitor adjustmant target, "How does this look...can you see the steps in this...?"

which has always proven to be satisfactory for me, and for others.

Windows 10 actually has a fairly decent color calibration tool that works well on laptop screens. Instructions are at
https://www.laptopmag.com …ibrate-monitor-windows-10 (external link)

In particular, pay attention to the variables that after brightness levels (don’t have the setting on “Auto”)..
