I have the 80 &90D and a 6Dmkii and was out today in the rain with my 100-400 IS mkii and got raindrops on the 80D. I don't often go out in the rain to shoot birds but I was checking out a new pond and saw some good shots.

I am concerned about the weather sealing, not so much on the lens but on the bodies.

I was wondering if it is worth looking into the 5DII or the 5DIII for a rain camera or what?

I have a plastic lens/body cover but with it on I couldn't turn the zoom ring and even though it is a large size for the body it was really tough to get my hand inside with the camera and with the hand outside I couldn't activate the BFF. Also it is hard to view through the finder.

what do people think?

I though that the 80D, 90D and the 6Dmk2 were all weather sealed.

I had an XSi (450D) that spent some quality time out in drizzle on a Scott Kelby photowalk a few years back. The XSi isn't the least bit weather sealed, nor was the lens, the 18-55mm kit lens that came with it. I did use a skylight filter on the front, and had to dry it with a paper towel every 10 minutes as the drizzle would accumulate on the filter and prevent the little Rebel from focussing.

The camera continues to work fine today, albeit in the hands of my niece.

If you want a weather resistant camera, you'll need to do a bit of research work. The 5DMkIII, in conjunction with certain L lenses fitted with a filter on the front, can be weather sealed. Typically the lens will have a rubber gasket on the mount to prevent or at least resist water/dust from entering the body. That's important. The filter ensures you're also protecting your L lens investment. If you're going to be out in bad weather for any length of time, you can get and/or make plastic bags with rubber bands and/or strings that can help minimize your gear's exposure to the elements while giving you access to the controls to take pictures.

I did have occasion when I needed to shoot with my 5DMkIII in drizzle with a 24-105 F/4L and an EX580 II Speedlite. (I don't recall if I had a filter on the lens, though I did have a hood on it to minimize what was hitting the front element of the lens.) I was out there for a half hour. Everything continues to work fine today.

Good luck!

Really you only have 2 choices

A 1D body

I shot a lot in the rain as shown above. 1D body is the only thing I would trust and even then, I was hesitant

or something as pictured below

light rain/snow mix and I was nervous. My camera case was soaked. I kept a rain jacket over my camera body as I was floating down the river

Weather sealed is not equal to water-proof. There isn't a single ILC Canon camera that is water proof.

The 80D, 90D and others are weather sealed to an extent. There are likely always areas somewhere that don't have weather seal rubber strips, like a multi-positional controller, or battery door, etc. The more pro cameras like 7D2, 5D4, 1D series etc usually have a bit more attention paid to this type of thing, and it is baked into the cost accordingly.

Then you have to worry about the lens, just because a body might have weather sealing, many lenses do not, and rain could a) damage the lens or at least get inside to the elements, and b) worse yet, allow rain water into the mirror box/sensor.

Whenever I am shooting in the rain, I use a Rainsleeve (or maybe another brand, I can't remember). It's basically a plastic bag that is roughly camera shaped that allows your hands to get to the camera while keeping the camera dry. I figure that as long as Canon want's to brag about water proofing, but are unwilling to back up their bragging with a warranty, I'm keeping water off the camera and lenses.

Canon never brags about water proofing. You won't see that in any of their official documents, interviews, etc. The warranties are very clear in water damage coverage (ie. none). However forum members, review sites, etc aren't so diligent with their choices of terminology. :)

Keep in mind that a lot of weather sealed lenses are not completely "weather sealed" until a filter is in place to protect the front element. This may or may not affect you.

Yea, I think that they call is weather sealing or something like that. In any case, they are unwilling to stand behind their weather sealing. You git water damage, you be payin'. :):) $5 bucks for a rainsleeve is really cheap insurance. :)

I use a Kitchen trash bag. I cut a hole in one corner and get the glass out and cut a hole where I can see the camera viewfinder. It would be a cold day in hell before I spend $8.00 for a bag like this. I used it as reference......but many photographers buy this thing

small plastic trash bags work great

most kitchen trash bags I have seen are opaque, I will look for a clear plastic one but I don't think I have ever seen one. How do you see through the viewfinder

I can see using a small trash bag, but these aren't $8 a piece, more like $5 or $6 for 2 of them and they are reusable.
