I'm surprised there is not already a thread for these BEAUTIFUL--and useful!--vehicles.

This 1959 American LaFrance was displayed at the 2020 show of the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor show this February in Glendale, AZ.. THIS is a masterpiece.. I'm particularly interested in its engine, a Detriot Diesel two-cycle 8V-71 'monster'.. This engine is part of several series that were available in inline and V- cofigurations and with at least four different cylinder capacities of 53, 71, 92, or 110 cubic inches per cylinder, and I'm sure there were larger sizes available for industial use--for instance, stationary engines, mine dumptrucks, etc.. Most common in class-8 applications--over-the-road tractors pounding up and down our hiways--was the 71 series.. The small trucking company I worked for in Phoenix in the early and mid 1960s had a Peterbuilt conventional tractor with an 8V-71 in it.. The 8V-71 was available at that time in 290- and 318HP versions.. The two-cycle Detroits were anything but clean-burning engines and are no longer legal for hiway use.. Being two-cycle engines, one turning, say, 1500RPM sounded sort of as if it was screaming.. Said another way, they DO NOT sound like a hummin' Cummins--that when idling sounds MUCH MORE 'rattlin'' than 'hummin''..

This truck looks great in its modern polished-aluminum wheels and tubeless tires.

The Detroit Diesel 8V-71 engine and the cab interior..

I think this chassis was NOT created with the 8V-71 engine in mind; note the notch cut in the rail adjacent to the exhaust manifold.. The other side's exhaust pipe is dented for clearance, visible in the next posting's pic.

Something for the real firefighters among us.

Note the dent in the exhaust pipe (far left) mentioned previously.

Classic fire engine of Iceland

Leslie Fire Department, MI

This is the fire truck and rescue unit used in the 1970s tv show Emergency!
Photos were taken in 2011 during a celebration of the restoration of the fire truck.
These vehicles are currently on display at the Los Angeles County Fire Museum.

Not sure this is the kind of stuff you are looking for in this thread.

Well, the beast is built like a truck and it does put out fires. It should count I think.

Two vehicles from the local volunteer fire department responding to an early morning house fire, which sadly was a total loss.
