The R5 will have to use a different codec than the 5D4 for video. My guess with HEIF image suppport, H.265 for UHD (which is now a standard HEVC video format).

I highly doubt Canon will give H.265 (or H.264) codec for 8K, it will be the crippled mjpeg like the 1Dxii and 5Div for first roll-out of highest video resolution. Canon did say that it'll give me an introduction to 8K.

Possibly, but MJPEG at 8k would result in colossal data rates. MJPEG is essentially a JPEG flick book; where each frame is compressed individually. The MPEG standards compress differences between frames, so can achieve much smaller file sizes (at the expense of potentially more artefacts).

Camera, some lenses, too little time, too little talent

But Canon already has HEIF and H.265 in the 1DX3. I don't think Canon will keep it a premium as even the iPhone has these codecs. H.265 has become a defacto for UHD: faster editing and rendering since most new hardware has acceleration.

They have been keeping it as a premium on the 5Div and 1dxii; that's exactly my point.

If canon give us h.265 (or h.264) for 4K, like the 1Dx3, I believe many people will be ecstatic.

If this truly is the mirrorless version of a 5D5, then more reason to have hope that it will have h.265.

Not that I shoot video but Canon has confirmed 8K 30FPS no crop and full DPAF functionality.

Also animal AF including birds.

From Jason McLean, Director – Consumer Imaging & Services, Canon Australia:

“Our EOS 5-Series was developed fifteen years ago to make full-frame cameras accessible to consumers, not just professional shooters. Today, that purpose remains steadfast as we continue achieving the ‘impossible’ to deliver the hybrid needs of content creators who are demanding uncompromised performance to generate more still and motion visual content than ever before.”

Hopefully that's an indication that it will be priced as what we'd typically expect from a 5D series camera.

That sounds like it's going to cost more than USD $3500.

I am hoping the statement that the 5 series was made with consumer accessible in mind is them saying it will be priced as such, though the specs say otherwise.

IMHO Canon wants to make a statement particularly to Sony and I think in this case price is an important factor; if they were to price the camera close to say the 1D series then I don't think it will pull Sony users away/back to Canon.

How much is the corona virus going to slow delivery if at all?

Canon has reported that the production rate of the new R5 and R6 cameras is down to about one quarter of the normal. This is due to lack of enough parts from various suppliers.

Regardless of what the cost of the R5 will be, a pretty small stack of memory cards capable of handling this 8K recording capabilities will cost an equal amount...

Interesting article - thanks for sharing. Those specs make it sound like it could be a pricey camera.....but if they keep the price more reasonable, in the mid $3k that could allow them to steel potential market share from Sony IMO.

Form this

I wonder what the advantage is of still having a mechanical shutter. It seems that the tech has advanced enough so that the shutter can be eliminated thus delivering a truly quiet camera.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

AFAIK, only the first electronic curtain can move at mechanical-shutter-like speeds, and the second electronic curtain can't move that fast. If it could, we wouldn't be seeing easy jello and more pronounced banding from strobing lights in full-electronic shutter mode.

Yes Cap'n Jack will probably tell me now about some military or industrial camera, but I am talking about what manufacturers of consumer cameras are doing now, and likely to be doing in the near future.
