if it's the same size as the current 100-400 II it could be time :-)

Yeah. A 100-500mm. That's great. But f/7.1 at the long end?

it'll probably be f5.6 at 400. this is a compact lens, which is important to me

I know, right!

The same lens but f5.0 instead of f7.1 ..... at double the price and double the weight, would be PERFECT!

Nikon has a 500mm f/5.6, lightweight for just under $ 3600
Nikon also has a 200-500mm f/5.6 for $ 1260

If they can do it, why not Canon?

One thing I'm curious about is whether the differences in the larger diameter lenses from the RF system are large enough that the actual amount of light being sent through at 7.1 is actually on par with 5.6 in the EF models.

Canon have 400 2.8 at 2.84kg and 600 f4 at 3.05kg.
Nikon 400 2.8 and 600 f4 are both 3.8kg.

Pick your specific requirements and each manufacturer will be much lighter, much heavier, or about the same.

Q: Who would buy a 300 f5.6 that weighs significantly more than a 300 f4 and 2 stops slower than 300 2.8?
A: Lot's of professionals.

I'm talking about 28-300L. large heavy and slow. Logic says the 35-350 that it replaced sold well enough for Canon to replace it.
So if this new 100-500 is light, compact and slow, I'm sure it will sell well.
The thing about slow lenses is you are not forced to buy.
You use existing fast lenses or wait for the yet to be released fast lenses.

It's not about the weight, Dave (although the Nikon prime is really light for a 500mm). It's the f/7.1.

I also think it's about the price.

The point Levina made seems to be a challenge to Canon asking, "if Nikon can offer these lenses at these prices why can't you?"

.

It was far from clear it was not about the weight.

OK, it's a slow lens. So is the 28-300L. People want them. Fast lenses are available.

I also think it's about the price.

Yeah, will be interesting to see how Canon will price it.

It's an L-lens for the RF mount. It's going to be awesome no doubt. It's going to be expensive, I'm sure.
And yet, f/7.1 seems consumer level. Unless that was a way to keep the price down.

I wonder to what it stops down with extenders @500mm...

Any rumours on price?
