OK so lets put this to bed

First of all....a 24-105 short zoom at 7.1 is useless for my needs

If Im using a SHORT ZOOM im using nothing larger than a 24-105 F/4 or a 24-70 F/2.8........I have the 24.70 f/2.8 in my bag....The only time its above F/4 is for group portraits

24mm-70mm.....not a lot of room for telephoto compression to do its thing....Its a wide FOV

500mm at F/7.1

I can blow the crapola out of a background if im close enough...look at Robamys picture....proof in the pudding

there is a big big difference of consideration BT 500MM and a 24-70 FOV with F/7.1

Let me sort of answer my own question based on photographyblog's review:

24mm ... f/4 wide open
35mm ... f/4.5 wide open
50mm ... f/5 wide open
70mm ... f/6.3 wide open

I believe the max f/7.1 kicks in at 83mm

This is a little disappointing. If they could have held f/4 a little longer, and f/5.6 a little longer, this would have been more appealing to me.

I don't suppose anyone has seen the aperture cutoffs yet? I hope it's the following:

24-35 ... f/4
36-70 ... f/5.6
71-105 ... f/7.1

The 24-240 is f/6.3 at 240mm

'nuff said.

More than double the focal length,. and f/6.3 It's almost as if they had to go out of their way to make this end up at 7.1 at a mere 105mm

My 100mm f/2 USM weighs nothing and cost about $350.00

To be fair, it's the smallest RF zoom lens and is the cheapest lens of the lineup. I can't see this being for anyone other than shopping around for a budget full frame kit that isn't used though.
