Just wondering if anyone has any experience with changing the background of an image in C 1 20? As an example, looking to place a sports player in a banner or an appropriate background for a player card (baseball card). I have searched but not coming up with anything substantial and wondering if I am just missing something. I have never used PS or LR but hear others talk on how easy it is with that software. Appreciate any info.

Thanks,

Tom

You can't do this with C1. Although you have layers and masks, these are only adjustment layers. There is no way to layer one photo on top of another.

Pretty sure you can't do that with LR either.

You'll need PS (probably even the old free version CS2?), Elements or Gimp (free) or something similar.

While it is petty easy with PS, that is assuming that the image to cut out is not too complex and that you know how to use PS. Do do something straight off the bat with any of these programs might take some time.

If it is a one-off and non-commercial and not too difficult, you might try finding someone to do it for you. If you are going to do a bunch, you might want to start investing some time in learning one of these software.

Thanks Edward. I may try Gimp. I avoided PS because of the monthly subscription. At least I can rest easy that I wasn't missing something... :)

As ejenner suggested, Photoshop CS2 can be downloaded and used for free. I would go that route. That old program still has a lot of powerful graphic tools.

Thanks Dave, somehow I missed the word 'free' in the post...LOL I may have to try PS2. I like playing with multiple software as well, have you ever used GIMP, not for any full workflow but for pointed tasks like this one?

On the one had gimp is being updated and may have more modern features. On the other hand they have been talking about v3.0 for years and I see they are still not there.

I found gimp a bit clunky, but preferred it over Elements. I'm guessing it is still 8-bit only, I think v3 was supposed to be the 16-bit upgrade, so there is going to be a limit on how hard you can push the editing.

I have not used Photoshop below CS6.

If you like messing with software I would probably try both - at least for a short time. You may find a favorite and/or features of each you like.

I have used GIMP in the past but then just went the Photoshop route because it was a more straight forward application. Try them both and see what you prefer, you have nothing to loose. GIMP also comes in a portable version that can be run off a thumb drive so there's no installation.

Adobe has a public FTP site. I would download from there to ensure a clean version.

GIMP works fine, I'll upload an example I did, where the images were both C1 processed, and then manipulated in GIMP as TIF.

Great, thank you, that would be interesting to see. I watched a video on how to extract an image using Gimp but the process seemed convoluted.

Along the same type of program you could also try Affinity. It’s not free, but cheaper than Elements.

Agree. Athough Affinity is not in the same league as Photoshop, despite the claims of some people, it is still a very powerful full featured pixel editor with an inexpensive one time cost. I'm no longer an Adobe user, having given up Lightroom for DXO Photolab Elite a couple of years ago. I'm planning on getting Affinity this week for those occasional situations where raw converters/editors don't have the functionality I need. I've played with Affinity's trial period on two separate occasions, and while it has limitations, especially with regard to raw processing, it has a huge amount of the functionality of PS.
