Whoa, what's going on in the third photo? Is the ice cracking behind you? That looks like a pucker moment!

the first 6 or so inches tends to crack. currently at 38 inches of ice. these profilers run up and down all day with ground penetrating radar to get a continuous ice measurement in the different lanes.

Very interesting topic and great photos. I used to watch Ice Road Truckers some, not a job for me.

The tv show is about 1% accurate compared to how driving on the ice actually is, Very easy to forget you're on ice and not pavement.

Pert near all reality shows are about 1% reality, and 99% made up drama!

I do remember one episode with a job I would not ever want to do, that being a pusher driver. When you're not the lead dog on the sled team, the view never changes.

I've driven over most of Oklahoma on ice, but there was pavement under the ice, not 1000ft of water. And I wasn't in a big rig.
