I have a Manfrotto 680B Monopod and would like to convert to an arca swiss type clamp and plates that would support a 7D2 with Sigma 120-300S. The Manfrotto qr clamp I'm using now seems to loosen up a bit with the heavy sport lens attached and I find myself checking it often, it seems to stay tight with lighter weight lenses.
I've looked at an Oben clamp and plate online as well as a Desmond, and Sunway Foto, can like their prices over RRS ,Arca Swiss,or Wimberly.
Thought I'd ask here for suggestions if anyone is supporting a heavy lens on a monopod , what you have and how does it perform without breaking the bank.
I did notice one system at B&H that stated it was suitable for compact cameras so that didn't sound encouraging as my lens with a 2x tc and camera will be right at 10 lbs.
Thanks to anyone for sharing your knowledge or experience in switching QR clamps and plates.

I use this with a 7d2 and 400/5.6 - it's worked fine for me, never any problems:

This is what I use for my 5D IV and Sigma 150-600C:

Initially, I was going to get the Sirui Tilt Head for about $40 less:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com …_Series_Monopod_Tilt.html (external link)

But I wanted a "Gimbal" for my monopod. Prior to getting the Sirui L-20s, I actually purchased a PMG Tomahawk Gimbal sidekick, but it turned out to be a bit too heavy to my liking.

Many folks would say you don't need a panning mechanism for your monopod since, obviously, you can "pan" with your monopod itself. I used to do that. However, I found the panning mechanism built into the head made my use of monopod another level of efficiency and pleasure. The Sirui L-20s is just like having a Gimbal on your monopod without all the weight. Panning at the head instead of at the monopod's foot not only allows faster and smoother bird tracking, it also saves the monopod foot from wearing out or even losing the foot, be it rubber or spike, from constant twisting motion.

At times, though, because I need to instantaneously get the camera off the monopod, I added RRS Lever QR plate to the Sirui L-20s. Most folks are fine with using the knob vs. the lever, so it's just my personal preference. Here's my monopod set up, the first one without the RRS Lever QR and the second with:

SYS, I can see where that would be a nice set up. Thanks for the photos of what you are using. You've given me some things to consider.

I'd second the Sirui monopod head, which comes with the Arca clamp installed.

I've used the "desmond" clamps, and have no fear of them with a 1D and 500mm f/4 prime, they are plenty solid.

My favorite head for the monopod right now is the Wimberley monopod head gimbal. It is great, but it is NOT useful for everything, it requires a lens with a collar.

If this is what you're talking about, I've never seen it before you mentioned it. I'd have considered this very seriously when I was shopping around for a Gimbal for monopod if I had known. It seems very recent?

The only thing about this that I'm curious is the off center weight and how that affects its use, particularly when carrying the monopod on your shoulder with all the heavy gear atop. Is it prone to more twisting and stressing the mounting point, etc.? Also, because of its off-center use, do you have to place one hand on the monopod at all times (and the other hand on camera) or can you be entirely hands free and place both hands on the lens and the camera?

That Wimberley Monogimbal head is super interesting!

I'm currently using an Acratech Long Lens head (external link) on a fairly light CF monopod. Nice damped friction drag. A 150-600 is my heaviest lens... the idea of gimbal-like balancing is pretty cool!

I've been using a Sidekick gimbal on a Monopod since at least 2007. With a large lens it's great, but it is a sizeable apparatus. I've worked to make the footprint smaller, (and desmond has helped)
see here;
https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1429801

But this new Wimberley head for the kind of use I do, replaces all that with something very compact and workable, and a lower cost than a sidekick and the additional hardware I employ.

I've not sued it with the 500mm a lot yet,. but I have not noticed an off center problems using it withe sigma 150-600mm.
